Player that missed the point

Post by kuson »

To give you some history, Ryzom is the 3rd MMO I have played. Previously I played SWG for 2 years and WoW for a week!

The first few weeks I was in Ryzom were an absolute blast. Things that I immediately liked about the game (pls note Silan did not exist when I joined) :
  • Lack of 'paths' on the mainland.
  • Awesome mature community.
  • Great graphics.
  • Stanza system seems like a genius concept.
  • Friendly GM's.
  • Treks are great fun.
  • World is huge.
  • The expansion sounds like a great idea.
My 'progress' so far :
  • I have been to the Tryker, Matis and some of the Fyros mainland.
  • I have levelled my digging to 11, melee to 55, magic to 75, crafting to 1.
  • Died approximately 2938129371 times ! ;)
  • Been to an Outpost battle.
  • Joined a Guild - the lovely people at Pegasus Foundation :)
However a few months in and I have lost motivation to play Ryzom at all! I got bored with levelling at around 75 and there seems to be very little to do. My average play session now involves logging in, admiring the weather effects, dieing a couple of times, chatting to a few people and logging out !

Things that are making me not want to login to Ryzom :
  • Death penalty. This both puts a dampner on exploration and also makes switching from dieing in combat to digging a problem because of the level difference.
  • Levelling just feels like a chore and requires (imho) a group to make any significant progress. Don't get me wrong I like grouping, but there are times when I log in for a short time that I do not want to trouble people to group up.
  • Self heal timer is too slow for solo play.
  • Although the worlds landscape is interesting, there is not many places of interest on them.
  • Complete lack of any 'dungeons' - ok caves would be more fitting here, but so far Prime Roots is the only one I have seen.
  • Digging and crafting do not really interest me but it seems to be what people do a large percentage of the time. Admittiedly I only got to lvl 11 or so dig but that was so boring I do not understand the appeal?
Other players that I recommended Ryzom to in my initial couple of weeks have both left the game already. These players were also mature SWG vets which had played for 1-2 years. So before you flame me keep in mind that whatever it is I am missing so are probably a lot of other players that don't bother posting here before their account expires.

None of us are called Johnny but I guess we are all players 'that missed the point'!

I still have a few weeks left before my account expires to get 'the point' so would be greatfull for any pointers as to what it is I am missing. Thanks for taking the time to read this long post :)

What strikes me the most negative about all posts of this ilk is, that people ssemingly aren´t prepared to accept a Game for what it is, and want to change it to "what they like better".
While you think it´s a"great Game" you seem to want to change it into another game, just because you do not like some points.
Well, a whole lot of people accept these points.
And a wole bunch of others accept these and don´t like others, and so on and on....

A Game is what it is. Most newcommers only see "their Game" and don´t even seem to think about others, that actually LIKE it the way it is. And that realy bugs me to no end.

YOU don´t like DP, so away with it.
Well, I´ve got no problem with them.
You go, I stay.

And I don´t even think it´s great that way. Not at all. I´d rather have you stay with us.
Only thing is, you´re not about to accept the game for what it is.
Trouble with all these suggestions and sometimes even demands is:
A Company just CAN NOT make every player happy.
If so, it would be completely different games for each one of us.

Sorry to start ranting a bit now, but it´s the same as in RL.
People like what they are used to and aim to make things better for them, and them alone. Skrew all else.
That saddenes me a great deal. :(

What do you think? Just because you and a few others don´t like the concept of DP, they change it?
Well, tough luck. They won´t. Because in every other Game out there, there are similar concepts, so good luck finding one that does not punish dying.
Simple soultion is, don´t die that often.
Do something about it.
Become stronger, group, learn to sneak.
But do something yourself and don´t just sit there wayting for the Devs to do it for you.

I´m not mad at you, I´m just dissapointed in that so few people can´t see whats right under their noses.

Edit: DP is just an example I piked, it applyes to all other things too.

i understand everything but this one. DP is a joke (it realy is)

for example:
if you die, you get 10k dp, you recover 9k but die again. you dp is 20k but you only need to pay back 11k (1k from previous and 10k new one).
DP goes up up to 10 times, so max dp you can get with 10k single dp is 100k.

Also, there is DP tickets. little pricey, but they are very usefull (especially when you going to logoff).

so, dont feel bad when you get dp. you can clear dp fast.
little math too: dpRemoved = XP * skillUsed/10

I agree that you need to group to make anything like rapid progress, solo progress is sedate but you can learn a great deal as you examine exactly what it is you are doing, which typically you don't have time for in a team.

Self heal timer length makes grouping and healers valuable. When soloing you might want to lower your sights and look for smaller mobs to hunt. They will give you much less XP than you can achieve with a team but are much safer for you, leading to less downtime, like sitting for 10 seconds after a fight while you review your Sys. Info :)

I find Atys fascinating and it has many more intricacies than Norrath, for example. Some differences can be really frustrating, like vertical edges, especially in Lakes. I do wish the cities and tribal villages had more to explore though, I agree there. Pyr is the only one that feels like it is near to completion.

I think most everyone finds digging dull to begin with, and for quite some time, but it does become the most rewarding tree eventually, imho. After about level 45/50 I don't think I ever thought of it as dull again. I just want to say that I think it's really well worth pushing that skill :)

Hehe even at 250 Prime roots digging is anything but dull :)

I don't want the game to change, just explaining which areas of it I do not like. It is just an opinion, obviously something which is going to be different for everyone, so I apologise if mine has annoyed you.

Blaah:
Maybe I should look into the DP ticket system a bit more as after dieing 6 times in a row I do tend to log off! Thankyou for the constructive tip.

DP: 10 deaths and you hit maximum, you'll get no more DP. This is when I feel most free to explore :)

DP Removal: Use your highest skill to clear it off - which is clear from Blaah's bit of maths. A lot of veterans will use digging to do this because they have a high forage level, digging can be done solo without difficulty or danger, and they end up with lots of materials to grind craft on.

Sorry, I generalized a bit too much.
But I wanted to get my point across.

It realy bugs the hell out of me, even if I missinterpreted your post, many do seem to want just that.

OK, so you don't like the DP, lets get rid of that then.

You don't like levelling. OK, we throw that out as well.

Self heal timer too long, lets cut it to zero and we can all experience infinite PvP battles and duels as each player spams self heal all the time.

No places of interest, OK, we take the devs off of any developement so they can make lots of places of interest for you.

No Dungeons, Hmm, better make some of those devs make lots of Dungeons for you.

That would make the game really....... Boring IMO

The fact that you got bored with digging after level 11 demonstrates that you must have a very short attention span and I would suggest that you just go and play something a little simpler and that doesn't require so much cranial input.

And saying That DP is a dampner on exploration is just a joke, takes about 5 minutes to recover and how does a DP stop you from exploring ?. I've never seen a system message that says

'Unable to access this area due to Death Penalty not recovered'

I would also suggest that the number of your friends that have tried the game and now left can be counted on one finger and that your claims to how many times you have died is vastly exaggerated. (even if you where to have died once every second whilst logged in 24/7 it would take you over 93 years to log that amount of deaths).

As for this being a Mature post, I find it rather childish that you see fit to make a negative post like this instead of just leaving the game and letting the grown ups get on with it
