Types of Ryzom PvP:
There are many different types of PvP situations on Atys. This is a general description of where and how each type works.
1v1 Duels-
Duels are friendly challenges between two players. One invites the other by choosing the option fom the right click menu while they are selected. The invited player gets to accept or decline. Neither combatant can be healed at this time and the duel ends when one person falls. Duels give Death Penalty if the loser respawns- but it is customary for the winner to resurrect the loser so they don't. Most in fact will consider it rude if you don't rez. (If you can't heal, make sure your opponent knows that ahead of time)
Team (TvT) Arena-
On the Ruins of Silan island and in Majestic Garden outside Yrkanis are special PvP arenas. The combat here is team based. You will see a timer when you enter the area and when that's up you are freely attackable by anyone not in your team. You can only heal players who are in your team. There is no Death Penalty for dying to players in arenas. These areas are often used for gladiator style tournaments, both 1 vs 1 and team based.
Guild (GvG) Zones-
A large portion of the Prime Roots known as "Lands of Umbra" and the special forest zone "Nexus Minor" are guild based GvG zones. (Note: The rest of the Prime Roots are not PvP zones.) You will see a count down timer upon entering these regions letting you know when PvP enables. Here you can attack or be attacked by anyone not in your guild. This rule is overridden for anyone that joins your team- they will become healable, as they weren't before, and you can no longer attack them for the duration of time they remain in your team. There is no Death Penalty dying to players in a GvG zone.
Faction (FvF) Tags-
All of Atys is fair game for global tagged faction vs faction combat. Upon earning 30 fame with the Kami or the Karavan you have the option to complete a rite to pledge yourself to their faction. Now you have the option to enable your faction PvP tag. If you choose, clicking the icon will count down a two minute timer at which point you become attackable by anyone of the opposing faction with their tag on. When your tag is on, an icon indicating to which faction you belong shows near your name and a faction chat tab also appears. Two minutes after activating your FvF flag, you must keep it on for 30 minutes before having the option to deactivate.
If no combat has taken place with the enemy, tagged players of different factions may still team and heal each other. However, the moment someone enacts an offensive action on a factional enemy they enter FvF combat engaged mode. At this point they cannot be healed by anyone except other tagged members of their own faction. Anyone who heals a FvF engaged ally also enters FvF engaged mode. The player you attacked does not become engaged unless they attack back. Tagged players, whether engaged or not engaged, can always heal untagged players.
"Engaged" mode lasts 10 minutes. Every offensive action on a faction enemy or heal on engaged faction ally restarts the 10 minute timer. During this time you can not teleport, and you can not turn off your FvF tag. Once you successfully wait out the 10 minutes without participating in FvF combat you can then choose to deactive your tag, which will then turn off after a 30 second timer.
There is no Death Penalty for dying to players in a FvF fight.
Special (FvF) Zones-
There may on occasion be special zones that are mandatory FvF. The most recent example was Almati Wood- a zone left from the temple construction event. This area is entered via teleporting NPC's at the Karavan Temples and Kami Sanctuaries. It is no longer FvF enabled, but in the past your side was chosen by your higher fame value. There was no entering neutral to the combat. You would see a countdown timer and upon completion you could only heal members of your own faction and could attack at will any member of the opposing faction.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Aside from possible (but unlikely) death penalty when losing a duel, there is nothing tangible to be gained or lost directly from killing or being killed in the above types of PVP combat. They can however be used to gain supremacy in an area for harvesting materials or hunting bosses, etc.
Outpost Battles-
There are 28 active outposts on Atys and most of the time they are in a state of peace. However if a guild declares war on another guilds outpost, the general area encompassing it becomes an Outpost PvP zone. When you enter the area a pop-up will appear on your sreen asking if you wish to get involved, regardless of what guild you are in. If you ignore it and don't hit any options, it will time out and you will stay neutral and un-involed by default. if you are a member of the owning guild, your options are Defend or Neutral. If you are a member of the guild that declared the attack, your options are Attack or Neutral. Members of any other guild and guildless players have all three options, Defend, Attack, Neutral. This is an entirely personal choice, members of the same guild can split and fight on both sides, for example.
There are more complex details on how outpost battles are won and lost but I will only mention how the PvP works. Players who chose Attack or Defend will get a small house icon by their name indicating they are involved. The opposite sides can attack each other at will and cannot heal players of the opposing side. Those who choose Neutral can not attack or heal any who chose a side. There is no Death Penalty for dying to players during an outpost conflict.
Note: Currently anyone who chooses a side in an outpost battle can not heal those who entered the area neutral. It is unclear if this is intended or a bug, will try to update if more information becomes available.
You will remain in outpost PvP mode (with the house icon) for however long you stay in the general vicinity of the outpost. If you leave the area you get a 10 minute count down after which outpost PvP mode will turn off.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
That sums up Ryzom PVP to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully it has been helpful.
If you have additions or corrections to suggest, please do so! I will edit them into the post and try to keep it complete and accurate.

Re: Explanation of the Ryzom PvP Systems
excellent post. Another thing to consider is Ryzom isn't really (at all) an uber 1 pwnd joo !!!1111111oneoneoneeleven kinda game. There are plenty of people here who like a good scrap but the community reacts strongly against players who gank, kill afk's, diggers (events not withstanding), etc.
If you're idea of fun is running around killing low level and/or defenseless people then its probably not the game for you. If however you like the idea of organised battles, fair fights and PvP centered events now and again, with the soon(tm) to be beefed up global faction PvP then you'll probably have a ball.

but maybe you like to listen to an old rangerette that tells you , that Almati Wood isn't a FvF Zone since about one month after EP2.

Re: Explanation of the Ryzom PvP Systems
Thank you for an excellent post. I am still new here and found it very informative. I have not ventured into the PVP territory yet.

Thanks, changed to be past tense. Never know when we'll have an active FvF zone again.thlau wrote:Good explanation Sehraci,

Nice job, but you left out one
TvT duels (Team versus Team):
it is the same as 1v1 duel, only it is enganged by the teamleaders of each team. Can also taken place anywhere with same rules of DP.
