So, here I am, an Eve Online player that's been trying out Ryzom for a week or so now. I played Eve Online for 3 years and then some, on and off with the occasional month of lapsed interest etc.etc.
I've come to Ryzom straight away because it's one of those few games that seem to share some basic values with Eve Online. Things like a focus on player content creation, freeform character development and general gameplay, quite widespread pvp with a decent system for balancing it out in terms of relative character strength (is this actually true in Ryzom ? ), decent balance between grouping over soloplay, player-run market system, generally good and involved community and so on. I'm sure many of the Eve Players here recognise these things in both games to some extent.
What I am wondering about however, having watched the Ryzom forums for a bit now, is why it is that two games with comparable subscription numbers, comparable philosophies and comparable communities have so wildy differing forums ...
These forums seem to have relatively little player-political content, relatively little activity in general and a shockingly calm average posting behaviour.
Am I overestimating the degree in which Ryzom allows player politics and player faction forming ? And what other reasons are there for having these tame forums ? (I'm not talking about having few flame wars or little smacktalk, those aren't something to desire).
Anyway, I thought that forum culture would probably be a good subject for my first post here. Don't ask why
Ryzom forums v Eve Online forums, for the rest of us that play(ed) some Eve as well
Re: Ryzom forums v Eve Online forums, for the rest of us that play(ed) some Eve as well
We fought, argued, and forum PvP'd for a good part of 18 months. Now, those of us that are still here mostly just play the game.
Except for Jayce.
If you look back at the forums around January/Feb. 2005 you will see many many many more posts.

Forums here are much more tame than the EQ2 boards as well. Hopefully they will remain tame. Maybe a bit more active, but tame is good. Forum drama gets so tiresome.

The forums have had much more player-political content in the past. However, the discussions here nearly always evolved into vicious flamewars. Some the worst threads were removed. I think that most people now see the futility of player-political arguments in this forum, leaving here a barren sort of a no-homin's land between hostile camps of PvP v anti-PvP, Karavan v Kami, etc. Player-political deals and content occur in-game or elsewhere.pietes wrote:These forums seem to have relatively little player-political content, relatively little activity in general and a shockingly calm average posting behaviour.

So, what you are saying is... it's PvP's fault the Forums are so quiet? *Grins and runs while struggling into his flameproof suit*riveit wrote: I think that most people now see the futility of player-political arguments in this forum, leaving here a barren sort of a no-homin's land between hostile camps of PvP v anti-PvP, Karavan v Kami, etc. Player-political deals and content occur in-game or elsewhere.

All I know, is that it is very refreshing to see so little conflict. I haven't gone back through the older posts to see what happened in the past, but I hope the forums remain as friendly... but become more active.
I get bored a lot at work.
One of the things that pushed me away from EQ2 (aside from the game itself being ruined by overbalancing and a general lack of developer backbone) was the forum drama bleeding over into the game.
So far, I haven't experienced anything negative with the population of Atys, and I am hoping things continue to remain so friendly.

(first off, PVP and Kami =D)
Yeah, I noticed that too. but judging by the stickies of TROLLS! FLAMING! I take it something massive happened that put alot of people off the forums a bit/banned.
Also the game is so awesome why would anybody bother with the forums when you can stare at your kewt Tryker/Obsessed with the truth Fyros/Silent Matis/Mystic Zorais do funny dances with spells six days straight running on nothing but drumsticks, coffee and the odd toilet break?
