<-- Yet another EVE player looking to bust out of the pod.

downloaded the client yesterday and spent my first hours running around the island last night.

After months of 'shoot the red +' Ryzom was a very refreshing experience

Looking forward to seeing you in game o/

I'm an ex-EVE player too. I loved EVE but found the depth and complexity of it crossed from fun to hard work and it's such a ruthless game sometimes I felt relieved to log off! I've found Ryzom similar in it's "sandbox", make your own goals way like EVE and the stanza system has a ship fitting kinda feel to it. My advice when you get to the mainland is to join a guild as it really brings the game alive and the guild I joined, The Order of the Dragonblades, really are a delightful bunch of homins. :)

I hope that has changed. If it wasnt for that and the grouping system i might have played retail.
Played a couple off time only in Beta aswell with similar severe lag problems, came back about a month after release to find to my releif no lag at all except breifly maybe loading in Zora or FH.

You probably found this out all ready but thought I would mention it in case anyone else who had a laggy experience in beta may read this.

Eve player here too. I played waaay too much Eve recently - mostly PVP/0.0 shenanigans - and ended up burning out a bit to the point where I couldn't even be bothered to undock and would just log in, sit in a station and chat. I could use MSN for that ;P Ryzom has been is a nice antidote to that for me so far. My Eve accounts are still running (training for carriers while I take a break ;P yay for new toys) and it'll probably remain my first-MMO-love for some time.

There are big differences and big similarities between the two games. The PVP in Ryzom seems to be nowhere near as central to the gameplay (afaik - I'm still a nub here) as it is in Eve but the PVE content seems much more developed. As someone said previously, once you get good at it, PVE in EVE is just a case of spamming missiles until all the little red crosses go away (especially if you're Caldari ;P). Slap the correct hardeners on and off you go. Thankfully the PVP in EVE is way more complex and nuanced, which is why most of us play it.

The main similarity between the two from my point of view is the sandbox-approach to gameplay - one where the game doesn't lead you by the hand like some games *cough*WoW*cough* and you are left to your own devices to make your own entertainment. The game just provides you with the tools and the environment to do so. I'm still pretty new in Ryzom but I'm told that most of the plot/story is player-driven which would also indicate a similarity to EVE.

I think that CCP and Nevrax share a certain amount of vision and a willingness to break away from the typical elf-grind* MMOs. CCP's vision is certainly harsher, more competitive and less forgiving.

I'll certainly be subscribing to Ryzom for a month at least to check out the mainland when I'm finished with the newbie island** (which incidentally is a great idea for a free trial). I think the game is beautifully made with very few bugs and errors (that I've encountered anyway). Its a subtle game and it takes a few days to 'get' it. I fired up the client on Sunday morning and played through until some daft time in the morning - found a nice group (v. important) did a few quests but mostly enjoyed just hanging out and learning about the game. At one point it just 'clicked' and I realised I was enjoying it more than any game for a long time.

*footnote: ffs why sooo many Tolkein clones?....I just don't get it. Every time a new MMO comes out, I let out a huge sigh. Just....why must everyone use the same tired old Elf - Goblin - Orc races. If it's meant to be 'fantasy', why don't they use their imaginations and 'fantasise' a bit?

*footnote 2; I've done all the missions on the newbie island ad I'm just milling about harvesting + crafting and talking nonsense. Any new folks (EVE-player or otherwise ;P) who need help with missions etc., just give me a shout.

Loved this footnote :) Playing the old orc vs elf game is rather boring indeed! But it sells well for some reason and companies will grind out crap if people buy into it. Look at EA :p

Same here, still playing eve. But as most vets know sometimes you need a break (especialy if you got a track of 30 days skills in front of you  ). I enjoy the relaxed sphere of Ryzom, no stress by looking at local to spot that pirate that is gonna blow you up :D

And well the R2 upcomming expansion here looks pretty neat ;)

OOh, yes... Same here. I just don´t get it.
But it seems to me that this is the case because these Companies are headed by company people. They don´t know a thing about real RPG, they just know:
"Fantasy". And Fantasy for them is "Lord of the Rings" and maybe they´ve herad about D&D (but only negative things from the media a good while back) and that´s it.
So they reason: Hey, we´re gonna make this strange Game, it should be "Fanatsy" so it´s gotta have Elves and Dwarfs and Stuff, that´s what "Fantasy" is all about, or is it?"
*sigh*
If you look at Companies who do it "right" those are often headed by people who have an extensive Gaming background and ho realy KNOW what "Fantasy" is all about. But they´re small, without the massive finacial backing of the big ones and so they more often than not, go under... *deepsigh*
But we all hope that Nevrax will pull through and on that note thoese guys who´ve build EVE are a great example of how to do it.

EVE player here as well. I play Vantras of the CVA on EVE....

This game seems to be exactly what any EVE player hoping to get out of the "pod" would hope to find. It has a mature community, sandbox type feel to it and is quite complex.

I am very new..preparing to venture off of the island tonight-cant wait to see what awaits me on the mainland.
