High-End Melee?

Bold: that is very disheartening to hear. I thought that in this game you could make whatever character you want and be successful. but it seems that instead you can make whatever character you want and be successful...as long as it is an Offensive Mage or 2H Warrior.

or perhaps I'm just jumping the gun a bit. i'm doing either dual daggers or pistols. so I'll see how it goes.

That really depends on what criteria you are using to base "what is successful?"

Success can come in many forms in this game... whether it is killing your opponent, crafting a nice looking weapon, gaining that title that stands out from the rest... This game allows me to generate a list that could fill a page!

Choose something you enjoy the most and if you are inclined to do so, maybe add some RP for extra flavour.

One handed sword is perfectly effective just on its own. It's not *as much* damage as a 2 handedd weapon, but it will work perfectly fine in a duo team, or even solo. If you choose to use a dagger in the off hand for a little extra damage or to equip a shield for better defense is up to you. Both are effective.

I can see where this would be the case if I get both skills capped. My concern is actually getting there. The things I'm looking at mainly are skills and weapons. I could be very wrong about this (and actually hope I am) but if I'm playing with a person that is leveling only 1 skill (say, 2hander) they will be able to do raise thier str much faster than I will, and therefor be able to use much better weapons than I will for the same time played. I'll have my skills in 1 hander and close combat at a much lower level than they will. Therefore I wont be able to raise my str as high (due to the lvl cao) and my weapons will do far less damage. Also, I wont have access to the same lvl skills, as my weapon skill will be much lower. I might be able to spread my points around more fully (as I'll have alot ofthe same skills in both lines) but I'll be stuck with weapons and skills that are much lower, and will do even less damage. Am I correct in this, or am I completely off base with this assesment?

That's partially true if you do both 1H sword AND dagger. However, the sword will level faster then dagger because it will hit more often and get a larger share of the XP (accurate attack stanza doesn't apply to off-hand)
So you may fall slightly behind someone doing *just* 2H, but not as much as you'd expect. Most people go back and do another melee to get more skill points anyway.
Be versatile about it. You can dual wield most of the time, but throw on a shield to push sword ahead a little when you feel you need to catch up. Can also drop back and do two daggers for fun on lower level hunts.

Ok, I feel a little better now. It's going to be very tough for me NOT to min/max though (recovering powergamer, sorry!)

However, I really would much perfer to dual wield, it just feels more like "me". It will be very tough coming to terms that it's not "efficient" getting there though. Old habits are hard to break and I'm a old dog to boot, hehe. If I can keep my 1 hander skill pretty close and focus on keeping my str maxed for that skill, I'm hoping I"ll be able to keep my weapons close to my friends. On average, what % are we looking at for which skill gets what?

It might start 60/40 if they're the same level skill. However, as sword gets higher lvl then dagger, it will hit even *more* often and your percentage will slip 70/30.... 80/20....
Unless you make a point to lvl daggers independantly to keep the two skills even.

Gotcha. Ok, I"m going to dump that 2hander and go with the sword/dagger combo and play they way I want to play.

if you want to go 1H, you have many possibilities:
- Dual wield with 2 daggers.
- 1h Sword, mace or axe with shield
- Dual wield with 1 mace, axe or mace with dagger.

The last one might be the one taking more time to reach the top lvl as you xp will be shared between 2 branches after lvl 100 ( i think its 100..).

On the other hand, would you take any of the first two option, this should not take longer than going 2h: do not forget that this game is team based.

The main asset of a meleer in any team is the tanking so that mage can nuke and make damages and so that the healer can be safe..

From there, if you pull the right mobs for maxi XP (3K), you will indeed do little less dmg than with 2h weap but you will get exact same xp so lvl the same speed as someone doing 2h melee...

Nitpicking here, but dual wielding only works with 1h sword and dagger, unfortunately not with 1h axe or 1h mace for an unknown reason to me.

If your aim is to max str and hp then you need to concentrate on one melee skill only. If you solo however it does mean you will be having breakfast or be the breakfast depending on the type of mob rather than the level of the mob. For example, I hit some types of mobs for approx 870 and others for as little as 150 approx. If you do have a high melee skill and therefore high hp it does make leveling lower skills (those skills that you can solo) that much easier.

I use 1h and cc to free up more sp for fight stanzas.

If you use 1h and cc and a team mate is using 2h you will get to a point where you are no longer able to get xp using the those skills in your 2 man team.
