I download the client and started playing a couple of days ago. As far as the game goes, I really like what I see so far, especially the attention paid to crafting and harvesting.
I was however surprised by the (lack) of client stability - my client crashes quite frequently; I don't think I've gone more than a couple of hours without a crash. While I would not have been surprised by this in a new game, I am surprised to see it in a 2 year old game. I suppose it might be my drivers, hardware, something on my system, etc., but I've updated to the latest drivers, and more importantly from a customer perspective, I haven't had problems playing games such as WoW without crashes.
Hopefully the crashes are related somehow to the new starter area and not representative of gameplay on the mainland, but it does leave a bad impression on people trying the game out.

Yes, the game client is very stable in itself, on both the mainland and the new starter area. Do you see the same instability if you have absolutely no other applications running? No background processes, just Windows and Ryzom? I'd check for malware and viruses if you do, and look at your hard drive. Could try lowering all the game settings too just to see if it makes a difference - like turning off EAX sound, might narrow it down to your sound drivers say (caused me issues until I installed an earlier version). How much RAM are you running on?

I don't run any real applications when running the client; I do have background processes (powerchute, itunes, etc.). I'm sure it's not viruses/malware - I'm a programmer, so I've always had a firewall, run firefox instead of ie, run av programs regularly and once in a while just eyeball the process list. I guess there could be a rootkit, I haven't checked for that, but I haven't bought a Sony CD in years, and don't know where else one would come from.

Test the RAM as well, memtest86 is a nice util for it.

Get onto Klients too and check with the GMs there if you're still crashing on reduced settings and have tried forcing both OpenGL and Direct3D. Having another suitable platform is quite a bonus, I'm jealous
