New Linux Ryzom player

Post by eqisow88 »

Hey guys, I finally got Ryzom running under Wine! Except for a small gaphical glitch where the textures around characters get darker, everything seems to be running fine.

I left EQ a few years ago and moved to WoW. Unfortunately I was horrible dissapointed in that, yet found EQ hard to go back to due to crappy expansion after crappy expansion. Since then I've been looking for a decent MMORPG and I think I may have finally found one!

If there was *cough* a native Linux client it'd be a no-brainer, but as it is I have to decide if I can live with the minor annoyances that come with playing through Wine.

Oh, and also, is there a way to look around with the mouse like in EQ, WoW, etc? I find using the arrow keys and the page up/down keys to be very annoying.

Welcome. :)

I also run Ryzom on Linux. It's almost flawless except for some odd little graphical glitches, but I'm not sure exactly whence that problem arises.

It is worth the "minor annoyances." :D

Hey guys, thanks ofr the responses.

I'm beginning to think the mouse look thing is a Linux/Wine related problem, very sad about that. Katriell, is it something you've encountered before?

On a more positive note, I was able to get rid of the previously mentioned graphical glitches by turning off shadows in the game settings.

Nope... What version of wine are you using?

Also, have you set it to Hardware mouse? (Click on System, Game Configuration, +INPUTS, MOUSE, Hardware)

Running 0.9.19 with WoW and Continuum patches (which may be causing an issue, but shouldn't as they're non-mouse related).

And yes, the mouse is set to hardware.

Hmm... I guess I'll go fiddle with some settings.

Edit: Is it normal for the mouse to go from the normal yellow themed pointer to a standard white pointer when hardware mouse is turned on?

FYI: It works just fine under VMWare on Redhat. Of course, you need to actually run the Evil Empire's OS in a VM, but it beats booting it directly if you're on a nice cozy 64-bit Linux Box. [and before anyone ***** about VMWare a pay product, you can download VMWare Server for free. They've changed the licensing model and they seem to be making their money off of support and enterprise products now]

(Fedora Core, VMWare Server, XP 32-bit/SP2)

Unfortunately, SoR *doesn't* seem to work under Windows Vista 64-bit. But then a lot of things don't.

I already use VMWare Server for a few things (ratDVD and other **** formats you encounter on BitTorrent mostly), but I was under the impression that there was no 3D acceleration in VMWare. After doing a bit of digging, it turns out this is only true in VMWare Server and that Workstation does, in fact, support 3D acceleration.

What is the speed like, though? How does it compare to Wine and to native Windows? RAM seems to be the biggest hurdle with VM's and my machine has 2 GB, so hopefully I'll be fine. I'll probably test later tonight, but I'd like to know what to expect.

P.S. - Mods, if this is getting too off-topic, please feel free to move it.

D'oh. My mistake. I'm using the real VMware client. I just made a bad assumption that the server had the same functionality as the client version. You can disregard my previous post as you'd have to pay for the VMWare that works and the 3D support apparently isn't official in that. From what I've read since investigating the "server" question, it appears that I've been extremely lucky in having it work in my config.

Go figure. I'm usually the one out of a thousand that things *don't* work for.

The speed is alright. Everything has to be turned off, but it's more playable than on my crappy Mobility-based laptop.
