Prime Roots and Matis

Post by cloudy97 »

Being a Matis wrote: - Do not wander beneath the surface of Atys, you will be in danger of waking the dreaded dragon of the apocalypse.
How do you deal with the Matis prohibitions regarding Prime Roots? How do you interpretate the quote above and how does it affect your play? Do you never dig in PR, or do you never even explore the place. I am interested in what reason/excuse you have if you do dig in the roots.

It appears to have been semi-retconned in event lore to only mean the deeper roots.

It was explained a long time ago that this meant only the deeper roots. The PR we can access, the Prime Roots are allowed. Secondary etc may be ok, I'm not sure, but the deeper roots are out of bounds.

"Wander" is the key word here...

This is what Dictionary tells us about the meaning of "wander":
1. To move about without a definite destination or purpose.
2. To go by an indirect route or at no set pace; amble: wander toward town.
3. To proceed in an irregular course; meander.
4. To go astray: wander from the path of righteousness.
5. To lose clarity or coherence of thought or expression.

So. When we go to PR we never "wander", we know exactly where to go - whether it is a certain source or the den of a Boss. We go there, do what we have to do and get out.

This way we never violate this commandment.

Praise Jena.

:D That's the most ridiculous excuse I ever heard, Komi! I believe the key words are "beneath the surface".

I think the Matis have generally adopted this taboo from the 5th Commandment of Jena - "You shall not descend into the bowels of Atys lest the holy light leaves your heart, and the Dragon's darkness devours your soul."

I am not interested in the excuses that the Karavan gave us to water down the divine commandments and allow them to fool us into trading pieces of our souls for teleport pacts. For me this means that I do not dig in the roots unless I desperately want some black or white materials, and I try not to spend long periods down there exploring. When I do venture down there I feel much safer carrying with me a Divine Kiss to help keep the holy light burning. Which makes it very difficult to level roots digging :p

Well, in The Flanagan Files, the Karavan actually forbids homins "to descend underground in quest of the dragon's lair for fear of stirring its wrath".

So, as long as we as head into PR without attempting to seek the dragon's lair, it's completely allowed. In addition, Komi DOES make a valid point. Most of us already know where we are heading to when we're in PR and are not in danger of accidently heading into the Dragon's Lair.

EDIT: Also, I'm unsure about the deeper roots explanation. Don't recall reading that. Is it somewhere in the lore? Oo;

No, the last word has to be mine :)

Kara and Kami should have disadvantages as well as advantages to help differentiate the factions...

how bout... no PR for Kara, no aggressive dig actions for Kami? You may offend your respective patrons!
