I got the game off of GameSpy, got everything ready then was told I need 827mb of patches!
The thing is, it'll start patching then just stop and never restart again. So I can't even get through the first patch of 24mb, because at most, I get 50% of it.
Now on other downloads, I usually just have the option to pause the download then resume. But it appears I don't have that here.
So in other words, I'm stuck. I can't get the patches downloaded.
oh, and I disabled my firewall just in case, to no avail.

Use that link to get the latest installer which needs very little patching.
Ryzom patcher is very sensitive to noisy/misbehaving network so make sure you have a good clean link and are not doing any other network stuff like file sharing or downloading. Also make sure that your system is virus free and possibly disable your antivirus software.
You may also want to open the patcher ports in your firewall/router as per the Networking FAQ
