I hate roleplay due to long posts on the forums telling me the correct way to roleplay and how my style of roleplay isnt the accepted definition of roleplay.

Jackoba,

Are you just roleplaying someone who posts hilarious replies on the forums or are you actually posting hilarious replies on the forums? I saw no brackets, carrots, "greater than" signs, asterisks, or even wookies... I'm totally lost.

:::thumbs through "how to role-play guidelines (/*OOC thus the triple colons /*OOC)":::

Jackoba... have you considered that perhaps those who are insisting that there is only one way to roleplay could in fact be roleplaying narrowminded fanatics? I mean how else could anyone actually think there's only one way to skin a (...dare I say...) Yubo?

Either way though Jackoba, I love the reply, love the wit, and most of all love how that's such a "Jackoba" thing to say. It's so IC you should be in detention.... if there is such a thing!

A/S/L???,

Just play it how you want and let others do the same..

You could all be Powergrinding or honing your latest rp story with all the time it takes to trawl through this thread...

The boy who runs across the park in his football shirt shouting...ROONEY TACKLES..ROONEY SHOOTS....ROONEY SCORES!!!!!...is playing his fantasy of being a famous footballer.

Best left well alone, it's miles off the OP's initial question anyway. I believe the topic was "why do some people hate RP" :)
The leisure industry spends BILLIONS of dollars bringing the alternative realities to us.... DISNEYLAND anyone ???
The racing games become more accurate in collision detection, track and vehicle representation, motion blur...etc....
The online worlds create places we can explore and 'live' an alternative reality, all made more 'realistic' and 'believable' because this is what players expect/demand.
People visit the cinema to immerse themselves in fantasy and adventure, they watch the television and make the soap shows the highest rated watching times.
We all participate in roleplay/fantasy/accepting what is not true at some points in our lives....
I enjoy to Roleplay...And I accept that some people prefer to play the game different to me. But I choose games that allow me to speak 'normally'..ie, no medieval games :) , I talk ingame using my normal vocabulary and enjoy the discussions and viewpoints of the 'characters' I meet. I rarely speak to the 'real' person controlling the character, Because they are likely ingame for the same reason as me...to temporarily live an alternative life.
What I really dislike are the people/groups who impose their own 'imaginary' rules over the normal game mechanics to allow 'pure' roleplay...but that is another point not relevant here ;)
Experience is essential.....Wisdom is priceless.

You can never apply a "behaviour ruleset" to a group of people, especially if they're a group of people with Asperger's or other forms of autism.
Yep, fair enough, in my haste I repsonded to an inaccurate generalisation with an inaccurate generalisation lol.
You're right, symptoms can vary immensely from one person to the next, while there are many overlaps, my son's symptoms vary quite a bit from mine.

Speaking of which ....

Is an innaccurate generalisation. It may apply to the vast percentage of the population, but not "all".
Some people, for medical reasons, are physically unable to participate in roleplay.
Some people with Asperger's believe absolutely everything is fact whether it is or not, they literally believe TV programs are real. That's not because they're participating in roleplay, quite the opposite, it's because the whole concept of "acting" is completely beyond their comprehension. It's something my son really struggled with in earlier years.

But I won't waffle on any further on the subject. Clearly the idea that some people can't roleplay is as foreign a concept to certain people as the concept of roleplaying itslef is to those that just can't do it. It is, nevertheless, a medically proven fact that some people cannot roleplay, they perceive it as outright lying and don't understand why people do it, others, like me, don't have such an extreme view but nevertheless still find it "weird". I can't actually recall any period during growing up where I played "make believe", I could do it if I tried, but what's the point of purposely making myself feel stupid ? And I've never felt the need for an "escape" from reality.

I know I'm in a minority and seem "odd" to many, but I'm not bothered about that, I'm quite happy with the way I am and if an Asperger's cure was found, I certainly wouldn't take it :)

Ooh and btw Komissar, that was an awesome event, nice work :) The RP bits may have amused me for entirely different reasons to everyone else, but it was great fun, very well put together, and much enjoyed :)

Arrr, maybe it IS 'ery rele'ant.

Roleplayin' need t' be consensual, I can nae pretend ha'in' a plague and spread it t' other people without their appro'al. Ya can jest decide no' t' play along, simple as thae. In smaller groups o' likeminded players you can enforce thin's. Tharfore, me belie'e you can make up rules t' play out a scenario not supported by game mechanics if ye wanna. Chances be that it collides with the grand story a' some point, like mayhaps the e'ent with E'olution's nuclear crystals might do, but ye can always say nae if it feels too wrrrong. A pence for an old man o'de sea?

I played my character in an online RP game for several years, of course over time groups took control of NPC locations and based their roleplay there..and used the rest of the game environment for 'grinding'....(OOC PLAY).
I have no objection to this style of play..I understand not everyone wants to RP ALL the time.It is fine until i encountered one particular group of hardcore rp...
I passed through 'their pesonal rp zone' and interacted with them as I had with every other character I had interacted with in game...all was amicable and nothing any different to the many other 'personal rp zones' i had visited.
It changed when I was unintentionally 'RP killed' in RP script they were acting out. I duly logged out and thought no more of the incident.
The following few weeks became iontolerable as I was informed by the RP group I was dead...therefore I MUST DELETE MY CHARACTER!!!!, it is the rules THEY live by.
I explained I was not aware of the severe consequences of the rules and the group and I agreed I should no longer interact with them in RP....I agreed and wished them no bad feelings..we just played the game in different ways..I used the mechanics..they did not.
Again I was surprised to recieve contact from the group explaining it was damaging their RP to constantly interact with players who continued to interacted with my chacter..after my death !!!.
Again I explained I understood the situation and frustration they faced....but it was one of their making and I was not responsible for that...I signed up and played by the GAME RULES !!.
This issue was never resolved......therefore I REALLY REALLY REALLY ( yes really)...dislike having rules IMPOSED ON ME !!!!...
p.s. the rp rules were 'flexible' to the players who were the group moderators. ..that also annoyed me they demanded me to live by THEIR rules THEY ignored when it was convenient for THEM....
well....maybe it is relevant to this thread cloudy97 :D
