As an former-avid PvP-er I feel necessary to chime in here.
I feel that the PvP system... as in the combat itself is better than a host of other games I've ventured into... because of the open skill system PvP is not which "classes" you have backing you up so much as how, who you have backing you up, works with you. Ryzom PvP is very much "who has played together and knows how thier teammates will react" better (or perhaps sooner) than the people against which they are PvP-ing.
That said I tend to agree with Jyudas (*Gasp*) while the PvP system is fantastic and so open to personal preference of play-style... the end result of "random" PvP is near meaningless. Outpost battles... events.... that PvP (if your machine can handle the sheer # of players involved) is excellent... but "get out of my homeland" 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 PvP... other than wear and tear on items... has no real end result.
In a nutshell:
I think the system itself is fantastic because of how significantly you can tailor it to your and your friends' play styles but the end result of the time spent PvP-ing in "non-events" borders on being fruitless.
Cheers,

I would like to point out that a fairly notorious group of Kamist homins stirred up quite a bit of trouble as a result of a "get out of my homeland" stance. It's only fruitless if you want it to be.

Re: Questions to you avid SoR players
There are very few games designed for PvP where there is value to PvPing. Most do because the mechanics allow it. SB was totally built ground up for PvP and was based on destroying other cities, but even that grew old quickly. So the "reason" for pvping was diluted over time.
DaoC was the same. Taking keeps was valuable the first couple of times, but there was a constant changing of hands so the "reason" for PvP was also diluted over time.
Ryzom really provides a strong backdrop for PvP reason that doesn't seem to get diluted. The fight between Kami and Karavan rages on fueled by the players and politics.

If you think you are "cool" because you dont RP...yet spend hours and hours watching your little toon dig imaginary rocks out of imaginary dirt, but someone who says "thee & thou" is a geek...uhh...yeah, do the math.
Re: Questions to you avid SoR players
I wonder, is that still true after the HP exploit fix? Since there are no rewards (or even penalties besides wear on gear) to PvP in SoR now.akede wrote:Ryzom really provides a strong backdrop for PvP reason that doesn't seem to get diluted. In this context, "honor points" I guess. The exploit? I think I don't know.katriell wrote:"HP exploit"?

Aye, honour points, some were able to get them, others were not. Was fixed in patch 500/501 (I think).
Since no one can gain them now, I would think that only the "real" PvPs are doing it now.
