Gamespot Review

Post by pelethar »

hi, i have downloaded the game and created my trial account last night.

I have just read the gamespot.com review and it really hammers SoR, though i notice it is almost 2 years old.

My question is, is the review accurate, or has it changed since then?

I havn't read the gamespot review, but if it is 2 years old then it is well out of date. That period around release was bad for SoR, but it has come a very long way since :)

Give it a go, and see for yourself.

I just gave it a quick glance; many of things they complain about are the things we love. i.e. they complain that the game doesn't give you enough to do (i.e., not enough hand-holding) and that the skill system is too complex.

To me, that's just spin. My spin is that the game is open and freeform and how much fun I get is based on how much I do in the game. And that skill system? It's not that complex, but it is flexible. That's a good thing.

thx for the replies

yes, i plan on trying it anyway, however, i was just worried about the fact it said about a lot of the quests in the newbie area being bugged and about how if a group all has a quest to kill someone, only the person dealing the deathblow completes.

When a game is reviewed there is a tendancy to make references to the lowest common denominator...Ie...can the 'casual' gamer pickup and comprehend the system immediately ?.
We must remember the reviewers have vast experience with games that follow a generic sequence. The Stanza system of Ryzom is something that is unique....understanding this feature, and explaining it in a review is not a simple task.
As the review is old I am sure a lot of it's comments are no longer accurate....but it did point you here and introduce you..and I am sure others...to Ryzom. So I will consider it a 'good review' ;)
Experience is essential.....Wisdom is priceless.

Hell, that review's wrong about many of the things how they actually were at startup. It's certainly not accurate today.

Check out MMORPG.COM. An active player is also a reviewer and did an updated review. I found it to be a good representation of the environment with the caveats he/she noted.

thx for all the info, i will definately give it a good try

btw, i read the new mmorpg review and it sounds good.

I have also read info on other sites and agree with the review about stanzas not being explained. A lot of info mentions stanzas but i have yet to find one that explains how they work and how to set up a few example ones.

Does anyone have a link to a guide on stanza's or is anyone planning on writing one?
