In the manual there is a short story (for lack of a better word) written by Elias Tryton. Throughout all of it he (or she) refers to the humanoid creatures on the planet as hominkind. But at the very end he/she says:
"But I have faith yet in this, the new Beginning of Mankind..."
Why does it end with Mankind and not Hominkind?

I believe that wherever faith is involved, mistakes soon follow!

So you think it's a mistake? Not a clue into a mystery of the game? After all Jena and the Karavan look highly human.

So do the Matis, IMO. Actually, I've yet to see a Karavan out of uniform, to know for sure.
I think it's probably a typo.
Human = Man
Homin = Min
Minkind probably wouldn't parse well in a spellchecker.

Honestly I bet it's a misspelling. Let's remember this is a game produced in France. Translation errors are common when localizing product documentation.
Re: Something has been bothering me...
Maybe something got lost in the translation. I picked up on it, too, though, and thought it was intentional. This game seems to be all about evolution, to me. The storyline seems like it is intended to constantly evolve; when the new planet is introduced in a year or two, the story is supposed to drastically change. I think maybe the use of the phrase "the New Beginning of Mankind" is foreshadowing something to come in the story. But, maybe I'm just reading too much into it. That's what my high school English teacher told me, anyway. Probably still applies.

For me, the slip of Elias' pen seems to hint that homins are the genetic off-spring of Mankind. There is a lot more going on inside my mind on this issue and has been since I first met the Karavan in the jungles of Zoraï last May and the changes in Jena's image seem to confirm some of it but I'll wait to say anything more until the Encyclopedia comes out.

Who's to say that homins aren't directly related to or are humans? Homins could be the missing link...but my lips are sealed, I'll let you decide

Woot! Woot!!! A clue! One thing I learned from playing Earth and Beyond, if you see something that doesn't seem right or doesn't fit, question it. It usually ends up being a clue.
Going on this even further if you read that same story in the manual it also says that some of the homins were taken to a far away place. The ones that stayed here went into the prime roots and are the ones who have reinhabited Atys. So this brings up three questions:
1)Where did they go?
2)Who were they?
3)Where are they now?

obviously you didn't look very close. Matis have pointy ears, as in elves. the Fyros are the closest to humans. Tryker have huge heads, and zorai are purple, both not good cantidates for humans. Matis are even potrayed as elder and aloof in nature which adds more to the elfishness.
ryzom.mmoworlds.com has a lot of good fluff onit, although i think it's all from beta. The Matis think they're responsibale for everyhting good on atys, obviously a mistake.
