Newb Experiences

Post by camel66 »

Back again,

So far still liking the game but still got more questions and observations.

1) Can you change the way you look or have a GM change the way you look after character creation.

So there I am in Ranger Land, staring at the list of available skills from the Trainer when all of a sudden I get this /tell. I like how a new window pops up for /tells. I just wish the windows were dockable so that they automatically attached to each other for easier placement. But I digress, there I was when this guy says to me, " *grins* I dont see many Tryker females out here..."

At first, I wanted to run to the bathroom and take a shower. Mix of Crying Game and Brokeback Mountain music playing in the background. But, I quickly regained my composure and sent him back a tell saying. "Yea no kidding, if you see one let me know!"

In EQ I played a Large Male Barb Shammy, in SWG a male Rodian that ranged from tall and fat to short and skinny, in WoW a large Tauren Shammy. In SoR, I figured if there is a chance at good PvP maybe a small race would be preferable? So I made a Tryker in hopes of keeping low profile and harder to target. It was NEVER, never..... did I say never to be hit on by another DUDE!

So again I pose the question of...uh Can I change how I look?

You might say, oh dont worry about it. It happens to all Trykers. Does it I dont know? But for some reason this reminds me of when I was working on my Jedi and was working on Image Designer. It was late late in the AM when I finished. But the funny thing was I had a line of guys 7 deep asking me if their toons looked better with Higher Cheek bones or a Shorter nose. Then again anything is funny at 5am.

So does this happen often to Tryker's or am I just lucky? From what I've read there are no true racial advantages, I can tell at least 1 disadvantage. But really are there any advantages/disadvantages for choosing different races, other than variety and possibly roleplay???

Are Cosmetics and Roleplay a big factor in this game?

There are hairdressers and face tatooists on the mainland to change those things. Of course you can change your armour/weapon(s), but other than that you are limited in how you look unless you make a new character.

I play a girl, dispite being a guy myself. If anyone starts hitting on me I generally tell them I'm a guy and they go away :)

But I doubt you will find too much of that here, its quite a mature community.

Don't forget, people roleplay. It's quite possible to have a 'romantic in character affair' without it turning into 'Brokeback Atys' if that worries you.

Not that there's anything wrong with that...

But no, that's just not for me lol. Yea I had this one guildie who claimed up and down HE was a girl. I ALWAYS assume that the female avatar in front of me is being driven by a guy until I hear their voice over the phone or a voice comm server like TeamSpeak or Ventrilo. But anywho, so this guildie swore he was a girl and even convinced another guildie of this and they got married across several SWG servers. Well that all changed after I got the guild on a dedicated Teamspeak server and I hear this deep Baritone voice calling out my name..."Oh Hell!!" Well, let's just say the "guy" in that marriage has never been seen since.

So while it's possible to RP such scenarios... It's just not healthy IMHO.

So again is RP and Cosmetics a large factor in SoR? Are there any real racial advantages other than the different regions?

Pretty soon I'm going to start running out of generic questions and I'll start into all the PvP questions. WHEE!

There's a difference between deception and roleplay.
I'd say RP is a fairly big thing here, of all the MMOs I've played, trialed or watched it has the most RP and the most RP accepting nature.

There's no real racial advantages exactly. The Matis cities are the closest together and they have an extra special material source. Other races have their situational advantages and disadvantages.

Stat/skillwise though, no.

Ulani is NEVER hit on in game! What is wrong, she's not ugly is she? I even had to put up a marriage ad last year, which nobody answered...

I don't think it will be a problem, the risk (or chance) to be "cybered" is probably pretty low here. I think your admirer was only joking a bit with you, not really flirting. Or you made a very very cute Tryker. :)

Hm, this was maybe the same guy who hit on my Zorai alt the other day on RoS, it started out as a friendly RP chat but he quickly made it obvious his goal was to cyber. I told him no thanks. :p

Was the guy who bugged you a Fyros guy?

Well we're not really Homins either, are we? We're HUMANs -- clearly a different species (though, assuming the homins are "hominidae", we are in the same Family of organisms).

I think the problem is that certain people cannot detach what happens in game from reality. They used to flirt with my blue-skinned Twi'lek dancing girl in SWG too. My response when they asked, "Are you female IRL?" was always this:

You know, I don't have blue skin or head tentacles in real life, regardless of whether I might be male or female.

That usually ended it right there, because (like a dash of cold water) it made them comprehend that I do not look anything like my avatar. This is true whether I play males or females. In neither case would I look like a Zorai! So what difference does it make if I am male or female.

RL females, BTW, are not always someone you want to hit on (as a guy) anyway. One very famous dancer from SWG (famous on the forum and on her server), was a grandmother (a young one, but still). I remember her telling me she used to just state that (that she had grandkids) and it would end all flirting immediately.

So you're just better off not flirting with anyone online, IMO -- at least unless you know them in RL in some manner also. And never, ever, assume anyone looks even remotely like their avatar.
