O.K., I guess Actors and Actresses COULD be considered "creepy" people... :D

When someone is Role Playing, that's all they are, an actor or actress. Some might be a Michael Douglas or a Kathryn Zeta-Jones, others might be a Billy-Bob Thornton or a Sandra Bullock. The majority of us are "no-name" third-string "also-mentioned" when the credits roll.

I don't hate RP'ers, but I will ignore a creep, RP or no RP.

Now that's a definition I haven't heard in YEARS! I guess you really are a geezer! Welcome to the club... :D
thurgond wrote:But pocket protectors! Man, have you ever seen a pocket protector, much less seen one in use? Well my uncle gave me one once, but I can't say I ever used it. I have, on occasion, gone around with tape-repaired glasses (heading the ball with your nose is bad technique), and I do own several slide rules, but that makes me...what's the word...er, um...a geezer. Yea, that's it, I'm a geezer.

I not only have seen and owned (still do) a pocket protector, I have used them specifically for the purpose intended.

*geezer mode*

I had an instructor once who was trying to make a point with several of the students in his "intro to Management" class who put up a picture of a non-descript individual with horn-rimmed glasses, a slide rule, pads of graph paper under his arm, and a pocket full of various pens and pencils all neatly placed in a plastic pocket protector. He called this individual "Smedly", and said he was the quintessential Engineer. He also said the hardest job Smedly would ever have was trying to explain something (anything) to a Manager (I can attest to that). After the laughs and snide remarks about "nerds" and their failure to grasp the basics of communication quieted down, the Instructor (who had very sharp eyes) called me to the front of the room and said "I'd like you all to meet a Smedly". The only thing I lacked from his picture was the glasses (never needed them), and my pocket protector was made of hand-tooled leather (made it myself!). Over the course of the semester I demonstrated to those young kids that not only was I a better communicator than them, I knew a lot more about the Company's business than they did. And today, I write and sign the checks while they still work for someone else.

*end geezer mode*

Couldn't resist, honestly! :D

I'm very late to this discussion and admit to have not read all of the replies.

Honestly I'm ignorant. I have no idea how to "role play" other than saying things like "Thank you kind sir" or "May the Sun shine upon your future." What am I missing? I don't make a point of asking where people are from in RL. I usually play a girl character although I'm a guy. I don't usually mention that unless someone point blank asks me or starts giving me gifts then I let them down easy. ;)

Any links to good articles out there on what makes a good role player? I'm serious.

Not aware of any links to "guides to roleplaying" but I'm sure there are some out there somewhere.

In general, if you are playing a girl toon, act as you would would expect a girl to act. If you are role playing a mercenary, be a mercenary (anything for enough dapper!), If you are playing a crotchety old man, be a crotchety old man. If you're role-playing a damsel in distress, ... well, don't call Zahan or Nightblade, they'll likely take advantage of you (they are Rouges, after all). Basically "act" as you would expect your character to act.

Honestly, the "Thees" and "thous" language is not appropriate to this game in my opinion, we're not playing Tolkien-esk Elves or Victorian England Nobles (and I'll bet very few of them actually spoke in Shakespearian English). However, that's just my opinion. Matisian Royals may disagree with me.

A good role-player is consistent and honest to his/her character's "character". A heavy (or high) role-player is ALWAYS in-character unless indicating otherwise with brackets or the like. A semi-RP not so. I try to be in-character in Around and Region chats, follow the flow in guild chat (sometimes in, sometimes out), and never in character in Universe (it is, after all, a player help channel, not a character help channel).

A good player (role player or not) is a good game citizen. Respectfull to fellow homins/players, in the game to have fun and NOT to deliberately ruin someone elses fun. We also (as I'm sure we are ALL aware) have a code of conduct which we are required to follow, and a good player does his/her best to abide by it.

And every once in a while, a good role-player participates in role playing events, and plays their part. Samsara Pub Nights are an example of a regularly scheduled informal RP event. Mostly every one is in character, but every so often some Out of Character "knowledge" slips in...but its fun, its informal, and would probably be classed as semi-high RP. Its a good place to "try your wings" and to practice "being" your character.

Roleplaying is basically acting and speaking as a character, and developing that character as a separate entity from yourself - like a writer developing a character in a book or screenplay. :) Roleplaying a character can be summed up in Past, Present, and Future.

Past:
Read up on the lore on ryzom.com and maybe Atys Chronicles. Write some sort of backstory/history for your character, especially covering where they came from, what their family was/is like, and any significant life events that may have contributed to why they are who they are now.

Present: Act and speak as your character. This is more than simply speaking with "RPish" phrases - try to understand and come from your character's viewpoint. An example of this is that what you know OOC, your character might not know unless they've learned it themselves.

Future: Interactions with other characters and major events (i.e. why your character decided to participate in an attack on a kitin lair, a friend leaving/dying, etc.) help to develop your character. You can take a more controlling approach to the evolution of their personality, directly guiding how they change and grow, or you can be more laid-back and just allow interpersonal relationships and life events to take their course.

I hope these tips help. :) It may seem like a lot of work, but once you get to know your character, it comes naturally. You'd probably enjoy it most if you already like story-writing and/or acting. Because that's what RP is, essentially: telling the story of one of the many characters in the Saga.

Seriously, you are probably roleplaying more than you think. To me roleplaying is about letting yourself be carried away by the world and by your character, and expressing how he/she experience the world.
