Reversed movement keys with mouse2 click

Post by huldu101 »

The problem i am having in Ryzom is this:

I bind my keys to these movements: W = Forward, X = Backward, Q = Strafe Left, E = Strafe Right.

When i click 'E' my character strafes to right and when i click 'Q' the character strafes to left, works like it should. However now for the weird thing going on. When i hold 'mouse2' down these keys get switched!, instead of strafing to right when i click 'E' the character *TURNS* to right, when i click 'Q' the character *TURNS* to left. When i let go of 'mouse2' my character can strafe just fine.

So as i was pinning down the problem i removed 'E' and 'Q' bindings and changed it to turn instead: E = Turn Right, Q = Turn Left. Now when i click 'E' my character turns to right and so on. However... when i hold 'mouse2' all of the sudden when i click 'E' instead of turning right, the character *STRAFES* to right lol!

What is going on here, why are my movement keys getting switched when i hold mouse2?. I cant play ryzom at all currently because i get a horrible headache from these "twisted" controls. I just want to know if this is working as intended or if its currently bugged.

In all other games ive played, like daoc, wow, swg, ac2, eq1+2 etc this have never happend. When i click strafe my character will always strafe and never turn. I use mouse2 to turn the screen around, always looking where the character is looking.

use mouse1 (left button) to just turn camera around, also left+right button to move/turn you char where you looking (camera) may be useful.

i have strafe (hardly ever use it) binded to ctrl+a (left) and ctrl+d (right). normal "a" and "d" turns char to left/right.

cant comment on those games you listed, but strafing in ryzom is not that useful (imho).

As mentioned, holding LMB turns the camera to face without turning the character (you can do it while running in a different direction than you're looking)
Holding RMB turns the character to face whichever direction you move the mouse in.
Holding both mouse buttons runs forward and allows you to turn - ie run whereever you point the mouse to.

Using the 2nd point, RMB turning to face, combined with the default keys set to turn the character, you can run around (either holding a "forward" key, or setting autorun (default "end" iirc)) and both strafe and turn by holding the RMB or not - when you just want to turn and not strafe then dont use the RMB, possibly use the LMB to look around; when you want to strafe then hold the RMB down and press the buttons you were using to turn with.

I'd never thought of it before, but I guess the RMB is set to "toggle turn/strafe"

Call me an old schooler lol, i cant get used to that "new" system they got going. Its far too different from what im used to. Ive always used mouse2 (in all mmorpgs i can think of atm), to allow me to strafe around and *turning* around with the mouse. I even had to talk with some friends about this lol, just to see if i was weird, but it turned out everyone i know in quakenet (irc) uses this setup.

The problem is its hard to explain exactly how it works, i just cant imagine playing in any other way. I actually did try to play but i got a horrible, horrible! headache after 30 seconds that almost made me puke over the keyboard so i had to put a stop. I tried again later same result (actually had to go to bed, was feeling very seasick). The movement isnt "responding" the way im used to lol, which i guess cause these problems. Im thinking way back now, i got used to this movement back in the old days of Doom and Quake. In Doom (might even been wolfenstein 3D) i used my key setup. When i started playing Quake i used the mouse to look around with my setup. Then i started playing mmorpgs in -99/00 i believe (with daoc). This is where i first learnt that mouse2 was used to "look" with by holding it down, to turn around i used the mouse and strafing let me move around very smoothly.

But atleast i tried a little of the game lol :) . It seems like a nice game, i actually never got the the npc a few steps ahead of me which is a shame. Id really like to see an option that would allow the keys to *NOT* reverse when you click mouse2 tho.

If you are always holding down mouse2 while running, just map your keys to normal turning around, and you will strafe with them.. :)
I find it quite easy to switch between rotating with the keyboard and rotating with the mouse, the way it is set up by default.

after some time iin-game trying to figure out why you may need strafing in ryzom... i must say that Ryom dont have strafing.
Ryzom has diagonal running (just confuses where you actually going)* and jumping left/right which is really slow way to move.

strafing in doom/quake (fps games general) allowed you to run in circle and keeping you "face" to center of said circle. cant do that in ryzom. so, therefore there is no real strafing in ryzom.

* strangely i can hold down LMB and look around while running forward and turning left/right never getting confused like i do with just forward+strafe left/right.

Everything works in ryzom just like in *any* other mmorpg. Its the mouse2 thing reversing strafe into turn that makes no sense whatsoever. Beside that it works just like any other mmorpg out on the market. I have no idea how you guys can play anything beside ryzom (i doubt you can) because if you did it would turn your world upside down like ryzom is doing when im trying to play. Ive seen some of your responses tho, noone i know in the gaming world uses any of you guys controls. Ryzom must be a game meant for you.. what more can i say lol.

Actually you can. But it's more like walking in a circle than running. It's a good move to use in video-recording.
