How can I use the MD5 checksum that's provided on the download page?

No it has nothing to do with the BitTorrent, it's there I believe to allow people to check the integrity of their download, especially when their installer doensn't seem to work, as in the case of the OP. I googled for a utility to try to do just this but haven't yet been able to use the checksum :(

My previous statements about having a good installer are hereby inoperative.
I could have sworn it worked, but I must have not checked all the way.
The MD5's didn't match. I had to run ryzom_recover and got it to launch
but saw checksum errors while it checked for files to patch. I'm doing the direct download.
More on this later after I get home from work.

lol Thanks Gil, you made me think straight. I have become so lazy and used to GUIs I was expecting the utility to compare one checksum with another for me and say "Verified - file okay" :) Now I find my MD5 doesn't match either :(

You can open the EXE file with WinRAR and run the test function

Hey,

After a while of seaching through the downloaded file I managed to pull a installer file from it.. Just clicking on the downloaded file doesnt do anything, by going through My Computer > Program Files etc there is a installer file.
Thanks alot for all your help, I am now happily playing SoR.
