What's the "Please Wait" icon telling me?

Post by cogent »

Hi folks,

I'm still here, making my way through the NPE.

I'm playing from the east coast U.S. I've noticed periodically a little icon appears on the screen telling me to please wait.

My question, is this network latency?

I'm afraid of spending too much time on this game to later find out that people who play from the U.S. are going to have a lot of latency because all the servers are in France.

I guess I'm wondering how much this effects your game play later on.

Thanks for your time once again!!

If you hit "n" on your keyboard, the network info window should come up - this will tell you your ping (not in ms... we dont know what its in), packetloss, etc... For a better idea of where the issue is, you should tracert or use pingplotter to 213.208.119.220 (the game server ip, which is in the UK not France iirc - could be wrong)

Please wait can either be network latency, a known problem for a subset of U.S. ISPs, or it can also be seen when playing on a PC which is slightly overloaded.
I used to get 'please wait' after I'd been playing for a few hours and been teleporting about Atys a lot (teleporting into different regions means loading new graphics etc.). This improved immensly after I'd doubled the amount of RAM in the PC. :)

Check your ping / packet loss, like Sprite suggests, if they seem fine then you might need to tweak your computer a bit.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I'm running 1 GB of ram. I'll check the latency tonight.

Another thing to also check is if you have Anti-virus software running or a Firewall, when I play Ryzom or WoW or otherwise I shut both of them down and the game will run better, less lag, etc.

I saw a note from Zerlin somewhere indicating that Ryzom uses 1.5 to 2GB of Ram. I know I'm running with 1G, and things like porting are really slow, disk drive is getting hit hard during those times.

Well, I don't have any virus software, but I definately don't want to shut down the firewall. The internet is a dangerous place!! :)
