About the skill system

Post by splende »

Hello all!

Newbie here, considering a subscription :)

Until now I have fooled around some with fighting, harvesting and crafting and have chosen skills without much thought. Now I am afraid that my skill choices may not be the best for the future and need to know if I should reroll to get it right? My guess is that the skill points will come much slower in the future and that I will regret that I wasted precious low level skill points on skills I don't need.

Is that how it works or have I missunderstood the skill system?
Do I need to plan my future career carefully before chosing low level skills?
If I have a character in level 20 that is badly planned, should I reroll?
Can anyone point me to a thoughrough guide on skills and character "builds"?

Cheers

You always get 10 SP (skill points) at a new level.
It is not easy to get all you want in the start, but later on you can train in several branches to get the needed SP. In the end you will have more SPs that you can spend.
For instance if you main fighter branch is 2H, you can train a bit in 1H, close combat and ranged to gain extra points.
So no need to reroll I would say, just take it as an extra challenge. :)

The thing is, as the skills branch they still share things like upgrades. So for example... Let's take fighting. At first you have one branch. But later it becomes 1-handed, 2-handed, and close combat (dagger/unarmed). You get 10 SP per level, but if you buy, say, the constitution 12 upgrade from your 1-handed XP, you won't ever need it again, which means you have points to spend on something else if you level 2-h or close combat.

Also, there are cross-skill upgrades; for instance constitution can be upgraded in the foraging line. If you upgrade it there, using foraging SPs, you won't need to use fight SPs on it later. I'm not saying you should do that (I generally buy con from the fighting side), but you can. And lots of skills work this way.

If you just go up ONE line, you probably won't have "plenty" of SPs until very late indeed. But if you go up even 2 lines in any skill set (and in some ways it's hard not to -- for instance if you want to be a jeweler, not just a "ring maker", you're going to have to go up 6 entire lines), you will have far more SPs than you know what to do with.
