I am (newly joined) in a heavy RP guild. Within the guild, guild chat, team chat, and 'around' are designated as "IC by default." We must denote OOC with special characters (curly braces etc) in those modes. However, even in a heavy RP guild, we recongize both universal and regional chat as being OOC by default. So if you are talking about region/universe, yes, those are OOC. If they bug you, turn them off, or switch to the 'around' tab.

For 'around', on newbie island there is not much RPing. But on the mainland there seems to be more of it. But again if you really are into RPing you will want to join an RP-oriented guild. Just realize that this is going to require you to fit into the guild more than in other cases (an OOC guild can overlook the fact that you are not a Kamist, whereas a Kamist-focused RP guild probably will not overlook that).

My sense is that compared to most other MMORPGs I have tried (COH, GW, SWG, etc), this one has more RP in it, by FAR, than most.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Well, to be honest, I'm not what chat I'm talking about. It's whatever is the default chat channel you see when you first enter the game. I haven't really played that much yet.

As long as we can turn it off, then I'm ok. I'm coming from RP servers in WoW. So that is one thing I wanted to avoid if I could (all the useless chat).

Do the established RP guilds accept those new to RP? I RP, however, I would not consider myself to be real experienced with it.

The universe channel is (should be) watched by whichever CSRs are around at the time - if it really starts getting to you then a " /who gm " will tell you who is online and you might want to send them a friendly nudge ;)

Having gotten used to SoR's chat system, I always find myself despairing at the seemingly bulky inflexible systems I find in other games... For each tab (I think, definately the User tab) on the chat window you can show/hide different "modes" of chat (around, region, universe, etc) and also add different tabs for the different modes. Sadly there's no way to selectively filter out chat from the "inscene" (ie the speach bubbles) - its either all of it or none of it. The way I do it is have the User tab showing everything except Universe, and then have universe as a seperate tab if I'm feeling in a helpful mood :p

The are indeed monitored. I've seen the GMs on them often bring things back under control.

type /who gm to see the gms on line. And, send in a support ticket if you think a channel is getting out of control. The gms are very fast to respond to issues around here.

Great news! So this is one thing that Ryzom has over WoW. I guess due to the sheer number of servers in WoW they do not regulate the chat channels unless someone reports them.

"Last night" in what time zone?

I was on "last night" in Pacific time. For a large # of hours. I watch universal chat most of the time because I like helping people, and even though new I try to help as I can. I did not see any off-topic spam on the universe channel while I was logged int (at least not enough that I noticed it, and I usually notice such things).

I did see lots and lots of WOW chat in Regional (not universal) when I was on the newbie island -- mostly of the sort that began innocently enough by asking comparative questsions, usually by someone coming over from WOW. This is understandable and innocuous enough, though often it then turned into a charged debate.

I have not seen anything of the sort on universal chat since I went to the mainland 5 days ago, and very little of anything in regional other than requests for something very localized ("rez north of Pyr?" etc).

Maybe if "night" for you is a vastly different time zone then you are seeing stuff I would not see. But so far universe chat has been very on-topic (though OOC) from what I have seen.

There was a point last night EST evening where Turen had to repeatedly ask for order and even had to tell us that it was "enough". So, yes it happens, and yes the GMs are very quick to address it. Like you Cogent, I dislike all of the non game related chatter, but I found the Uni chat invaluable when I started out and am trying to give a little bit back so I put up with it.

The chatter that sparked my question was last night, from my perspective as an east coast U.S. player.

Bunch of stuff about WoW and other game comparisons. Just turned me right off I'm sorry to say.

I'll probably give it another shot tonight now that I know I can manipulate the chat channels.

I'll be honest, I had that deer in the headlights stare last night, way too much to figure out.

The user tab is (I think) the only chat tab that can be manipulated. You can ignore the other tabs by well, just not looking at what's in them.

On the user tab, if you right click, you will get a list of all the possible channels and can turn different ones on/off. For instance, since universe was often NOT about the newbie stuff, when I was on newbie island, I turned that off, and spent most of my time looking at "regional" chat. Now that I'm on the mainland, I leave universe on because region's a lot quieter (there aren't as many help requests in regional because a higher % of players are vets who don't need as much help). Also lots of Silan people still ask for help in universe and I try to help them when I can.

If it's bugging you the easiest thing to do is just click the "around" tab. You will then see nothing except local chat and emotes by people in your immediate vicinity.

I must be unusual, because I actually LIKE having an ooc chatter function in a MMORPG. Just random social chatter while I do various things.

Granted, that said, Universal isn't the place for it. But I wish there was a channel for it.
