I've been reading over the lore in Ryzom and have more questions than answers it seems.
Can someone tell me, or give me their RP reason for why we all start out in the newbie area with no skills and no real knowledge of anything in the world?
Are we the ones the lore describes that roamed as nomads after the portals (rainbows) were destroyed by the Kitins.
Are we the ones who've been called back to rebuild the cities?
I'm confused as to how to act in a RP sense.
Before the starting area where was I?
Re: Before the starting area where was I?
My position is that we all arrive at the Ruins as refugees from the worlds the Homin retreated to when the Kitin practically destroyed Atys.
Ma-Duk and Jena have sent emissaries out to spread the word and encourage refugees to return to the mainland to help rebuild.
Perhaps we have no knowledge of magic. Perhaps we are not trained warriors. While some may be smiths or farmers, many do not know the first thing of how to work with a tool or use a pick.
That's my take.
Looking forward to seeing what others come up with.

Re: Before the starting area where was I?
That's what I understand. Before the Ruins of Silan were discovered and opened to the new arrivals, there were twenty refugee camps (five for each race), and I took it for granted that whoever arrived there was from a survivor group from the old lands.cogent wrote:Are we the ones the lore describes that roamed as nomads after the portals (rainbows) were destroyed by the Kitins.
RP-wise, my main char was found as a baby by the guards of one of the camps, around 2490, making him about 35 on "release", about 45 today.
It would be hard to have mature homins arrive at the refugee camps without any skills, they survived kitin patrols and all that, after all... so maybe the new arrivals enter some kind of dream-state, reliving previous experiences, and awake from that state when they arrive at their races' cities
Re: Before the starting area where was I?
From what I remember, way back in the day there was a leaning towards the players being those refugees who had been living in the Prime Roots (having been taken there by the "Rainbows"). If this is the case then there are a few problems with respect to the ruins in the PR being largely unknown to homins... a possible "other" roots was put forward at some point I think.
The "nomads" I believe are now implied to be still out there... some of them part of the "Marauder" group, and others just random homins who show up in our cities only to die in mysterious circumstances (I think that was the backstory of one of the eventcharacters).
My view (and I think the current consensus given some of the stories) is that we are descedents of the homins who were rescued by the rainbows, but its not exactly clear where we went... there were some short stories ages ago about a fyros refugee who came from his village to the starterlands via an encounter with a kami - not sure where they can be found now or if they had the info you're looking for.

Re: Before the starting area where was I?
We lived in the mixed race refugee camps in an undisclosed part of the roots, taken there by the rainbow teleporters at the end of the kitin war.
We emerge from those places and are 'processed' through the refugee islands. In the old days that was a series of racially based camps, now it's through Silan which in one way emulates the lore refugee camps (mixed race) but in another doesn't (By emphasising faction etc far more heavily than the old lore did) but that represents changes on Atys I suppose and the Rangers at least are neutral.

Re: Before the starting area where was I?
I was under the impression the New Lands (our current home) was founded by those homins the Kami/Karavan helped escape from the kitin in the Old Lands. (These are the people who hid in the PR for a time, no?)
However, all new refugees (players) are those homins that were left behind in the Old Lands. The kitin completely destroyed all civilization there and hence the refugees have little to no skills. They've been surviving very simply since then always running from kitin. There have been events hinting that some groups or tribes have been rebuilding strength and knowledge int he Old Lands but little is known about it. And the refugees wouldn't be fromt hese groups.
I like to believed all the refugees were brought/guided/directed to the starter islands be either Kami/Kara or more wisened homins, as it is very unlikely a refugee could make the trip on their own.
I believe the new Silan island was established by the Rangers as a much closer border point with the Old Lands (and I would say hence the greater influx of new players- shorter trek time to guide them to us means more trips)
This was just my understanding, and not likely to be entirely factual.

Re: Before the starting area where was I?
It's VERY confusing. The lore actually contradicts itself in several places. In one place it sounds like we are as you say, from the nomadic tribes wandering around the wild lands on the surface of Atys (the "old lands" I suppose) and are sent by our tribes/people to the new lands to help re-build things. In another place, it sounds like we just came up from the prime roots.cogent wrote: Are we the ones the lore describes that roamed as nomads after the portals (rainbows) were destroyed by the Kitins.

I have assumed the former, rather than the latter, but it really is quite confusing because it contradicts itself in more than one place.

Re: Before the starting area where was I?
That is how it seems in most of the lore, and that's what I had assumed.sehracii wrote:I was under the impression the New Lands (our current home) was founded by those homins the Kami/Karavan helped escape from the kitin in the Old Lands. (These are the people who hid in the PR for a time, no?)

Also we need to note that, although it is confusing, there are 3 "regions" as it were:
1. New Lands (what we now call the "mainland"). These are "recently discovered" and that's where the 4 races are building new civilizations.
2. Old Lands. Presumably another continent similar to the mainland but now long since wrecked by the Kitins and inhabited by nomadic hunter-gatherer tribes of simple homins.
3. Prime Roots. A dangerous area where some homins escaped to. NOT the same thing as the old lands.
In the lore, there appears to be some confusion (due to different writers perhaps) about the last two. In some cases, what is said of the "old lands" in one document is said of the "prime roots" in another (about where homins went and sheltered and so on).
I think they probably need to get ONE person to attack that whole section and clarify it.

Re: Before the starting area where was I?
Confusion muddling those two could partially be explained easily.chessack wrote:

Perhaps among that first wave that was rescued to hide in the Prime Roots (and I always assume different PR then we have access too now) not ALL of them were brought up to the New Lands initially.
Perhaps most did, but there were left wandering nomadic groups in the PR much like the ones in the Old Lands, so refugees could potentially be being drawn from both camps to this day.

Re: Before the starting area where was I?
According to the lore/info in game, some Homins did not retreat to the Roots, but scattered on the land trying to survive.. Eventually the youth travelled to the Ruins of Silan as refugees to start a new life...
Chiang explains this to you in your first conversation with him.. if you forgot the specifics or just sorta skipped it.. you can see what he says in the new starter guide cartoon, which is available here: http://www.ryzom.com/documentation/Manu ... f/download
Also this from the Lore overview:
Kitins were huge insects that inhabited the Prime Roots. One day, in their interminable quest for the Dragon, Fyros excavators uncovered a nest of the creatures. Fraught with fear and horror, their immediate reflex was to destroy the first giant insects they came across. But alerted by the slaughter, legions of soldier kitins suddenly surged forth from underground galleries to eradicate what they considered as their natural enemy. And so the Great Swarming began... Homin cities were decimated after epic battles, entire populations were massacred and precious knowledge lost. And still the kitins spread over the Bark like wildfire and one after the other the great civilizations crumbled to dust.
Many homins were able to escape through mysterious teleportation 'rainbows' leading to safe haven until these too were destroyed by kitins. Homins remaining in the infested lands could but flee into the wilds where they were forced to live nomadic lives in constant fear of kitin attack...
Then one day heroic travelers, bold as they were unexpected, came from afar in search of the surviving homin communities with a message : homin civilizations were being rebuilt in new lands of promise!
Young refugees in their droves have since been urged by their elders to risk the long and perilous journey to join the newly flourishing civilizations in the newfound lands. For great need there is for guilds, and homins eager to improve their skills and talents to help forge the destiny of their people. All hands are welcome, there is still much to do, and many a danger to overcome: kitins still patrol in the wilds, invasions still all too often occur; and many areas are beset by the pestilent Goo, a dreaded disease that ravages habitats and makes the wildlife rabid.
