Great information in this thread, thank you. I played SoR briefly in one of the betas, right before they locked everyone out for a few months. Played EQ for years, played their caste system end-game, "excelled" at it as much as one can with that sort of thing, but after jumping over to WoW like a rebound relationship, I'm quickly losing interest as I know what's coming once I hit 60, and MCS (Multiple Character Syndrome) can only prolong that inevitable grind for so long. As beautiful and playable a game as WoW is in reaching the level/abilities cap, it becomes an all-too familiar experience once you cap. I'm not interesting in grinding a semi-linear endgame itemization cycle, I've done that.
So while I'm not terribly concerned about what I've read here regarding the "lack" of a defined endgame in SoR, in fact I'm quite eager to see how this more dynamic approach of gm events etc. plays out, and I'm quite happy to explore of my own accord if I know thats how the game is constructed...I'm a little concerned about what I hear of "missions".
I don't necessarily need an outline of every step saved into a log, but I do want to have a feeling of interaction with the content above and beyond exploring new areas. I like to have story motivation behind travelling to a new area at times, for example; not all characters are borne to be vagabonds. Is there more than just the recitation of lore, but actual interaction with a plotline, and is there any reward system that goes along with it, or is all advancement obtained through skill increases? I see indications that there is some sort of faction system, does that come into play?
I appreciate in advance any explanations offered.

Faction Conflicts over Outposts and later whole areas of Atys, are providing a lot of the now ongoing Fun for some people. The PvP Crowd mostly, but the political shemes and implications they bring with them, to a lesser extend, are used by the RP crowd too I think.

There are definitely resource groupings on RoS, and not all of them are "safe".

I loved WoW for a year. It was my first MMO. I had a fantastic guild of great people (which compensated for the overall poor community, as I just ignored most of everyone else, heh).
But as its been said, hitting level cap becomes an entirely different game. Pure raiding grind and loot hoarding. Before I had ever played an MMO, I loved the concept of a 'world' to explore and carve a niche in. WoW is very much a social 'game'. There is no attempt to make it live on a level beyond collecting loots. I may dual-subscribe when the X-pack comes out, but until then, I look forward to exploring Atys.

As a matter of necessity, WoW MUST present it's content as scripted quests. When you consider that their subscription base comprises 1/10th of one percent of the entire world's population, (**) they can't realistically do GM sponsored events. And to a degree, they do some good story telling in those quests.
(**) About 6 billion people on earth, about 6 million subscribers to WoW. Do the math.
However, that implies that you have the option of looking them up on thottbot if you want to. It's an interesting commentary on what people want that such information is available and is used so heavily.
It's hard to say that Ryzom is better or worse than WoW. For every criticism you can level at either game, it's possible to find something wrong with the other. All that can honestly be said is that they're incredibly different.
If you do a quick number crunch, it works out that you should expect to spend, on average around 50 hours in UBRS trying to get your tier 1 chest piece in WoW. Do you have the same "end game grind" here? Maybe you do? How long do you have to fight bosses, and dig for materials in PR, in order to collect the required mats to make the most Uber end game weapon / armor? However, you DON'T need to spend that entire time teamed with 14 other players, that's for sure. None of that awful "raid or quit" mentality.

6+ months of hunting lvl 270 bosses allowed enough mats to create two "uber" heavy armor sets (max parry, high %s on everything else). aye wow was a big dissapoinment after level 40+ same runnning around the same slow flying journeys to and from massively heavy loaded auction rooms where the comp slows down to a crawl for all races and classes
dont get me wrong Wow is a very pretty fun game for the first few months but it lacks the staying power, once you reach the pinacle of chars and you have a few diferent characters youve danced around the auction house and made a few fraps videos its all jsut a bit dull i prefer a solo game where i can develop and go it alone explore
i played ryzom for about 2 hours last night and it is just stunning, so totally impressed, i need to play longer but the potential is all there
crafting is a real skill theres no quick bulk buys of stuff and knock out as many pairs of gloves as you can, the combat leans towads magic a bit at the start which is ok but heading out with a swiss army knife or frying them for 3 or 4 times the damage wiht acid, ill take the melty option
the community so far is stunning, ive read through lots of the forum in the download time and it really is unique its really pleasant, no one is bragging or parading aorund screenies of that uber item typing 'i am l33t at every opurtunity its a nice place,
it looks from the patches they have taken players suggestions and no one can argue that a class is overpowered which used to be the bain of my life in most other games.
the graphics are lovely, i like the fact there is no music personally it always get switched off after 2 mins of play anyway and ruins the actual feel of being there for me just funky background effects
i really liked when i started i wasnt being harrased by higher levels to be leveled and join a guild, like so many games out there KO is one where i started and then some guys just powerleveled me upto 30 before i coud blink and i learnt nothing about the game and gave up, also its a terrible grinding game where leveling has no clear advantages after level 30+
there is no screaming at other players you ksed my mob
the mobs are great, no roaming backwards or fowards they will actually come ot you etc
at first the interface is abit daunting and probably not so inuitive as it could be and i like wasd to move about but you soon get used to it, not hard though
i like the way also that the first mob i kill i snot going to drop a weapon that im going to use for the first month that i have to think scrimp and save or when my friends start playing they are suddenly going ot find something that gives tham a massive headstart
cool all in all me likey
to me after two hours it knocks the socks off WoW, i can see myself getting sucked into this game and possibly ending up in the unemployment office as my life wizzes by because i cant tear myself away possibly handed divorce papers at the same time
