Hi Everyone:
I've been playing Ryzom for a few days and have found the community to be very welcoming. Thanks for the help and patience.
Having played DAOC a long time I have some questions about how Ryzom works before I sign up for a year. Thank you for helping.
Q1: Regarding items in the late game are player made items superior to quest / mission items? Is the late game more about questing for powerful items or finding the resources to craft powerful player made items (or both)?
Q2: How can I find out how many players are logged into my server?
Is there a limit to how many players can be logged into a server?
Can a server be full?
Q3: What does Ryzom do to minimize lag? Is the whole world one big instance?
Q4: Is each server able to interact with one another or are they each a completely seperate world? If each is seperate do the stories diverge?
Q5: What is the best way to learn about the different guilds? Okay, other than talking to the people I happen to meet. The guilds section on the Ryzom page lists only two and that cannot be right for a game that has been out for over a year.
Looking forward to your replies.
Cheers all.

Ok lets see how much of this I can answer. But first;odrew wrote:Hi Everyone:

Welcome to Atys! *huggles*
1: All of the good items are player made, missions don't grant any good items like on NPE. Crafters are essential and can get quite rich as a result.
2: Unknown, unknown and never in my experience
3: No instances in ryzom except for personal apparentments and guild halls. The server is usually very stable and runs with minimal lag. It is split into several zones, each spanning a continent. As for how it works in more detail than that, I don't know, but it works and we are happy with it
4: Yes you can talk to other people on other servers. The shards recently underwent a redevelopment meaning that when Ryzom Ring comes along, we can interact with those on other shards too
5: There is a good guilds thread on the guild section of the forums I suggest you look at that.

Re: Newbie with questions
Hey Kibsword, thank you for the reply.
So in the late game crafters are key, that is very good. I like the idea of a real player driven economy with player made goods being the best available.
I experienced some major lag yesterday but that is probably due to me cranking up the display settings to test out my new monitor. I'll lower those settings today and I hope that will help.
The guild page you referred me to was exactly what I was looking for, thanks Kebsword.
- One of the reasons that I would like to know how many people are online at one time is because I like to socialize and play with other people. I'd like to know that there are over 1000 people online if that is the case. I do not know how popular this game is and if very few people play it why would I pay for a years subscription?
Alright then, one last question for the oldtimers. What keeps you playing this game? I usually find that I play most games for just over a year before moving on to something new / different. How does SoR hold your interest?
Thank you for any feedback.

Re: Newbie with questions
Okay, one more question.
Last night I was playing and grouped up - had a great time.
Tried to accept more quests and it told me that I have already completed the maximum number of solo quests.
What the????
I'm surprized by that because I expected to be able to perform all of the quests from all of the trainers. So far I have done the following quests: fighter3/mage3/craft3/harvest3.
What am I doing wrong or do you have to clear out the quests that you have completed before accepting more new quests? I just thought of that now as I'm typing.
Thank you for any help or advice.

Re: Newbie with questions
There's no way for us players to find out how many people are online at any given time (no practical way at least...); I don't think that any questions wrt to the number of subscribers has ever been answered either. Suffice to say that there's usually enough people around to do something If you type " /who " in a chat window (without the quotes), then a list of people online in the region you are in will be shown in your system infoodrew wrote:- One of the reasons that I would like to know how many people are online at one time is because I like to socialize and play with other people. Edit:
Your mission list can only have a certain number of entries in it; just click "Complete" to remove them from the list once you're done to make more room Once off the island, missions are less "quest-like" and you will usually do them more than once.Tried to accept more quests and it told me that I have already completed the maximum number of solo quests.
Re: Newbie with questions
All items on the mainland are player-crafted, aside from a set of armor dropped by one extremely difficult NPC boss and NPC items sold by the merchants. The boss armor is very good but very rare, and the NPC items are overpriced and have poor stats.Q1: Regarding items in the late game are player made items superior to quest / mission items? Is the late game more about questing for powerful items or finding the resources to craft powerful player made items (or both)?
Can't, as far as I know.Q2: How can I find out how many players are logged into my server?
No and no.Is there a limit to how many players can be logged into a server?
Can a server be full?
You can create characters on different servers, and you can communicate with characters on other servers.Q4: Is each server able to interact with one another or are they each a completely seperate world?
Yes. A prime example is the recent Tryker governor election - the outcome was different on each server. If each is seperate do the stories diverge?
Because if everyone said that, the population would never grow.I do not know how popular this game is and if very few people play it why would I pay for a years subscription?
The guild I'm in, roleplaying, and the fact that even after thirteen months I am learning/seeing/discovering new things about the game and the world it contains every day.I do not know how popular this game is and if very few people play it why would I pay for a years subscription?

Re: Newbie with questions
fair to say there are not generally 1k online at any one time, but also fair to say there is absolutely no need for there to be for you to have fun.
once you make friends and/or find a guild there will be plenty of others around to have fun with i promise
nice thing about a non-massive population is you get to know a large proportion of people in a way thats impossible with bigger ones.. the feeling of family/friendship is really nice

Re: Newbie with questions
Thank you for the replies Sprit, Rushin and Katriel:
A tight knit community is a good thing but not having anyone around close to your level to group with is a real problem for a lot of games.
Another important factor is the games long term profitablility. If the game doesn't make money then it will not last no matter how good the game actually is. I would not like to sink in months of my time to have a game disapear.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers all.

Re: Newbie with questions
you are forgetting just how many skill braches there are.. people don't have an overall level that precludes them from teaming. A lv250 elementalist might only have lv21 ranged so can still team effectively with others that level.odrew wrote:A tight knit community is a good thing but not having anyone around close to your level to group with is a real problem for a lot of games.

Re: Newbie with questions
Hmmm...
Must admit that I hadn't thought of that Rushin.
I've never encountered a game like that so that may work out well.
I think that I am going to really enjoy this game.
Especially with the consentual PvP; because sometimes you feel like a nut and sometimes you don't.
See you online!
