Where are the screaming hoards of warriors ?

Post by beowulf1 »

Hello everyone!

First, as a noob to SoR I woudl like to say thank you for being such a great community!!!!

Here is my question.

I have noted while I have been in SoR that there are very few people that actually fight melee. Just about everyone i have seen or played with use magic. Sure I understand that Atys is a very dangerous place and that ranged is often more logical when it comes to safety. But for someone like me that is use to playing melee professions/Scrappers it is kind of awkward. I was jsut curious as to why most homins choose to not fight melee ?

My character is still on Silan but she is highest in Melee (in terms of combat -- her highest actual level is a few higher in Foraging). I intend her to be a "Fighter/Magic-user" but definitely with the emphasis on melee combat.

I should be ready to leave Silan shortly. Just trying to get a bit more Jewel crafting going (her non-combat "prof" is going to be as a jeweler) and be able to leave some decent Q40 jewels on the newbie vendor before I depart (since I was looking for good jewels myself and could not find them, I figure I can contribute a little before I leave). Then I am off to Pyr.... and the main game!

So soon there will be +1 melee fighters on the mainland. ;)

Well If you are ever in Zora, look up Murabi. It would be an honor to dance the dance of blades at your side.

beowulf, melees only got (relatively) recently upgraded to usefulness, through resist jewels and hp bonues on armours. before that they were, all things considered, quite underpowered and only marginally useful as aggro-control and even les as actual tanks. also, magic is easier to learn and use, it literally requires less brainpower to be a useful mage than a useful melee.
thus many players concentrated on magic, which led to another problem: only very persistent melees found out how to be really useful and often didn't get much support from their team members, because they were used to fighting with mages and didn't know how to help melees.
the situation is getting better, but few are willing to give up what they learned, and few are knowledgable enough to support those who go the way of the real warrior.

My main character's highest skill is two-handed sword, at level 230. I find the diversity of melee weapons / damage types / combat animations rather interesting, although magic also has a great deal of diversity and complexity. Also, the guild most of my characters are in started out as a primarily melee guild, so that influenced the direction of my main. I've always experienced the largest support for melees in teams, and I found magic difficult to work at first. So all of that influences me towards preferring melee.

I'm a 250 melee now (2h sword) I still prefer melee but as anyone around here can tell you I seem to be a bit of a masochist for choosing the 'path less travelled' for everything :)

I'm learning magic (grudgingly) but only so I can get my magic resist aura up higher.

Mages are still overpowered - when melee/magic users come into conflict, I think the next 'tweak' should be, perhaps, upping the crit chance for melees.

As your posting as a noob I assume you are asking why there are not alot of melee types on the starting island.

I started the game 2 days ago. First night was mostly to learn the game but last night I played for a few hours and found melee to be a breeze. Went and bought a sword and dagger and could pretty much 1-shot every monster I saw. Even those hyena things (forget the names off-hand Rangus or something like that) that attack in groups of 4 or 5 I was just target, 1-shot, target, 1-shot it was a breeze..

If anything I'd say most of the people I've seen are doing crafting & harvesting compared to any combat but I've not gotten far enough to see more then 1x*, 2x*, and 3x* monsters so perhaps there is more combat further in...

I have seen you on newb island, Murabi. :)

I am sure we will meet again. I plan Sandaara to be a bit of a "ranger" type -- wandering a lot, not staying in one place very long, and "off to see the world" in that sort of sense.

I can toss you onto my friends list if you want.
