The intention of this channel is for help requests.

It is not intended as a RFT (request for team) or RFI (Request for Item) channel. It is not for spamming etc.

Call me a "high and mighty" if you wish but this particular channel does have a degree of protocol around its use, that does need to be enforced.
Thats fine and i agree with that, but im sure it isnt your job to tell these new players this is it?

When you select Universe chat, theres a pop up box saying it is a monitored chat channel and any abuse of it will be dealt with by a GM......not some random player who thinks they are a GM - please let the new players enjoy the game and let the GM's do their job.

I know if i was 'told off' by some random player for chatting in the wrong channel, id pack my bags, leave and uninstall the game.

Im sure the whole point in the new starter isle is to bring in new players, not scare them off with the Egotistical community.

Conversely, I find it refreshing that the player base cares enough about the game that they are willing to police themselves.

I, too, am a mainland player who likes to help out on the Universe channel from time to time, and I enjoy it when I see my peers reminding each other that they've gotten off track, followed very shortly by a query to find out if we've missed a question. I think they are keeping to the spirit of the channel and relieving the gm's of babysitting time so they can tend to actual problems. Now if someone is downright rude to you, then that shouldn't be tolerated. But if it's vet players just letting you know how things are and what channel is best to find a team in, you might want to learn a little from them :)

i don't think there is anything wrong with pointing out what the channel is supposed to be there for. In Ryzom we dont really have a them and us attitude between players and GM's, there is lots of friendly interaction, with CSR ingame chatting and gossiping with players.

The reason we have a nice attitude and community is because people care about it and want to keep it. If older players didnt make an effort to tell new ones what was and wasn't acceptable then it would go downhill fast.

I've seen often in the universe channel quests like: "where do i find the fine zun amber?" "where are the weanling yobos" etc.. things that are about the newbie island, which unless the universe people made alts and checked it out, isnt related to them.. the region channel on the island has more than enough help for the new people, its only fitting to direct mis-channeled questions there yes? Direct the player to the channel that could help best yes?

I concur.

I used to run a MUSH that had a <newbie> channel, and a a <general> channel. When newbies asked newbie questions in <general>, they were directed to <newbie>. This is just common courtesy, as our "Newbie Helper Squad" (NBHs), used to sit on the <newbie> channel, but didn't always watch <general>. No one was insulted by this.... as long as you phrase it as help and not a nasty directive.

Personally I find that good information or direction is valid whoever it is given by.
I do not think it is only a GM or 'official' helper that can guide, In my view a community that monitors itself is more stable and open than one that is dominated by the silent majority who rely on GM's to monitor all.
Experience is essential.....Wisdom is priceless.

Very well said, and I agree with it. The fact that we, as players, try to keep the community mature and friendly, says a lot about the community in a very positive way.
If we all didnt care, we could have a LFG and WTB channel in no time, and I think (or maybe even hope) that Nevrax would cancel the universe channel then...

Generally I have found most the channels to be fairly friendly. One thing that seems to happen in every game is that some seasoned players automatically assume that new players are suppose to have had some brain scan done on them to bring them up to speed on all that has ever been said about the game.

At times the comments from the seasoned players can be as bad as the leet speak that some use.

For me though the channels are a minor issue. I do know how to use ignore or to totally turn a channel off ;) When playing MMORPG's I automatically figure I will be turning some of those off.

Since posting this thread originally I have subscribed and plan to be moving to the mainland within the next twelve hours. The last character I made I have gotten to level 40 in a couple of skills, and 30ish in the others. During my time on the island I have come to believe that my worries seem to have been unfounded. I do not believe that is on accident though, I do believe there is a good group of GM's who keep things under control in a very nice way. I also see many seasoned players on the island who are contributing very positively to the experience.

So even if the community remains the same as I move from one to the other I will be happy with the people. Next will come the other challenges of finding the right place to fit in within the game, but that is another subject.

/Cheer

I could not agree more. Beat me with a yubo if you must. But this community is by far the greatest and most helpful, sincere community I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

I think what we must be more careful of is this.. Letting our fears of the smakdoods and l33t'ers alter our moods and behavior so we end up turning into the very thing we strive to rise above.

Fear leads to aggression, aggression leads to hate. Of the dark side these are, and vigilant we must ever be.

Some little green dude said this to a noob once and he turned out ok.
