I and my wife have been trying out SoR for a few days and I have just a few questions for you veterans if you have a moment.
1. Is this game a "QuestFest" like WoW? Is it basically running around to collect "1-million squidtails"?
2. Can the game be enjoyed with a husband/wife team? In other words, is down the road we'll find you can't complete quests/etc without a full team, etc.
Thanks,

Question about game-play
Re: Question about game-play
Let me just add, what is the normal game session like for most vets? Our game of choice atm is DAoC. So normally we group up with guild friends and either PvE for one reason or another or go out to PvP. There's many things to do but not that much if you know what I mean. So what do you vets do on average when you long in to play?
Thanks,

Re: Question about game-play
Welcome.
1. No. There are simple kill-#-of-X, deliver-X-to-X, find-X missions and such, but they are not the game's content.
2. It can be, yes.
When I log into my main character, I check my friends list to see who's online, and find out what my guild's doing. If there's anything that needs to be done, like crafting equipment or handing out elevation crystals (consumables that double exp gain), I do that. Crafting equipment is something I look forward to, especially if it's magic amplifiers, because the crafting system is so interesting and complex that making good items takes quite a bit of experimentation and personal knowledge. I might run around a city aimlessly while I chat. Then I might dig, or work on my crafting skills, or join guildies in teaming or trekking or whatever. All the while, most of what I say is In-Character. I spend most of my ingame time roleplaying, and almost everything I do is motivated either by helping others (whether actively doing so or just working up my skills so I can do so more efficiently) or RP. I don't do missions, usually, unless I decide to go on a Tryker fame rampage (maxed my civilization fames with Zorai and Fyros already, not going to bother with Matis), in which case I'd go to Fairhaven (the Tryker capital city) and collect bandit-killing missions (which yield the most fame) from the Corporal NPCs. Then I harass the three bandit groups of Liberty Lake (the region Fairhaven is in) for a little while. I also do not grind, except for a few hours at a time about once a week (my guild trains together every Sunday).
In conclusion, I play for the day-to-day RP of my various characters, and the events that advance the IMO-very-interesting saga. ^_^

Re: Question about game-play
Thanks a ton. Now to figure out all the different things about tthis world. Oh, are there different servers/shards/etc that you have to choose from when you leave the starter island?

Re: Question about game-play
nope, you're already there/here. the different shards have their own islands, when you choose to leave you'll be transported to your races capital city, you can still chat to people on the island with /tell's etc.

Re: Question about game-play
Playing is much more complex than loot/collect/kill
Example one....Collecting resources is an entire skill in itself, for the character AND player. Solo collecting is obviously possible...but with a partner the options and fun increase dramaticaly. One can prospect and 'careplan' (stop the resource exploding in your face) as the other digs the actual items. Of course this will lead your skills in different and complimentary directions.
Example Two....Fighting is safer with a partner, make sure you both have 'heal other' spell and you can avoid the trip to last spawn point. For example one can attack with magic as the other heals with magic...again the defensive magic wil increase for the healer, and offensive magic for the attacker....complimenting one another. So the roles in your playstyle will be different, eventually bonding you into a team that supports one another effectively.
This is the beauty of this game that is not immediately apparent.....It makes playing as a couple both fun, and effective.

Re: Question about game-play
Sounds great. So this "help another stablize a node" while ther other forages it to keep it from exploding thing... how does that exactly work?

Assuming you will be doing the care planning and another will be doing the foraging:urnobick wrote:Sounds great. So this "help another stablize a node" while ther other forages it to keep it from exploding thing... how does that exactly work?
1. Make sure you have the Ground Stability and Preservation actions.
2. Create toolbar buttons for each of the 2 actions and/or combine them into a single button by editing the stanzas so that both actions are in the same button. I like having all 3 options.
3. Make sure you're in the same team as the forager. No xp otherwise.
4. Immediately after the forage begins digging, click on the same source they are working and activate your careplan action. It will auto-repeat unless you ask for another action.
5. As you monitor the health of the source, you can switch between the different care plan actions (all GS, all Preservation or combination).
6. The foraging action the forager uses may need some editing; for solo digging you'll use gentle actions, but for team digging, you can use more harmful methods.
Once the source is done, you'll both get xp. Unlike team hunting, the xp will not split evenly; it's based on your individiual levels to some degree.
Personally, I like to kill a source that has run out of mats. Watch the blue line. If it runs out, switch to Ground Stability only. Depending on the time left, that may cause the life line to run out early; that's ok since the source is empty anyway. Then, you can move on to the next source more quickly.
Yes, it is possible for a very low level care planner to help a high level forager this way. You won't be able to do as much good as a high level care planner, but it's still helpful. It'll be up to the forager to adjust his digging action to the appropriate level of harmful vs. gentle relative to the amount of aid you're able to give.
