Please Clarify on intergrated graphics

Post by possy »

Can't create a window (1024x768 32 bits)
- check windows display settings and set desktop to at least 1024x768 resolution with 32 bits colour depth and that Direct3D or OpenGL are enabled
- you can also get this message if the computer does not have adequate video hardware (onboard video chips like SiS or Intel are prime examples of video systems that cannot run Ryzom)
- note: you can try to launch the game in 800x600 resolution but will not be able to see all the buttons as the launcher screens require at least 1024x768
So until I upgrade to a real graphics card, so im not using my Intel Integrated Graphics, I can't play Ryzom at all?

Contrary to popular belief, Ryzom will run on Intel integratd gfx ;)

It's not pretty tho. I run at work on one and my second account at home is also on Intel integrated.

If you want to try it first without having to buy a new card try the following

Run ryzom_configuration_rd.exe from within your Ryzom folder.

Set Display to Open GL and select windowed mode (mine is 1024 * 746)

My display details are

Landscape and Chars - Medium
FX - Normal
Textures - Low

In Display Advanced - Disable Everything

Sound is enabled but I dont use EAX (not sure if its significant in getting it to run or not)

Save config and run Ryzom.

You will get an agp memory allocation warning when you first run and an option to see furter info. If you select yes the game will quit and some info loads, just select No.

And away you go. The game will load and run fine but there are drawbacks. The gfx are ugly :) You wont see clouds, especially toxic gas from yelks or sources (Ive died so many times from gas but I can play from work so its still cool)

Porting is slow and you will most likely lag when trying to move in areas with a lot of gfx. Fairhaven is painful because of the water. I call it the "zig zag lag run" (but I can play from work so its cool).

Initial loading of the game takes ages (but I can play from work so its cool)

Occasionally the game will crash (very isolated this one) due to being unable to map a new texture. I only get this on my work machine and is most likely due to me running other applications in the background but hey guess what? yup, I can play from so its cool ;)

Just as a side note depending on your card all you really need to do is force it to use OPENGL.

I ran this on a laptop with an Intel Integrated card last night:

Intel (R) 915GM/GMS, 910GML Express Chipset with 128 shared memory

Was able to run it fine in full-screen at 1400 x 1050 as long as you pick OPENGL on the config screen and don't leave it set to auto.

Granted your milage may vary depending on the age and chipset but it is possible.

Also as a side note (not sure if it was due to OPENGL or not, but had to change the mouse to hardware cursor otherwise it was very laggy..

there's not a lot of mmogs you can play with onboard graphics anymore. I'm surprised to hear you actually can.

If you decide to go for a card, I am using a 6800GT NVidia card, it's aging but still quite usable and since it isn't the latest and greatest you can probably get it fairly cheap.
