I played in beta prior to release, and found the game far to unfinished for me to be willing to purchase at that point in time. Over the last couple of months I once again started looking around for a different MMORPG to play, and came across SoR again. Then this new trial came out, and I bit.
The developers have done a great job on improving the game since beta, so getting to see it again has me hoping that this is the game to fill my gaming time now.
The issue I am having is with the community. I play some games that have really immature gamers, and I deal with it. But I deal with it by making a note to myself what they are like and not expecting anything better from them.
Now I see posts about how great the community is for SoR, but so far I have only been exposed to the island
I have found the GM's to be great. Also there are some experienced players on the island who really seem to be good people. But..... OMG.... I have only played one other game with worse people to be around then are on the island. Now this is only a minority of the people, so let us be fair about it. But these people are just plan bad.
So can I get some feedback on what those of you who play on the mainland, and who have been on the island could identify as the difference between the two? I mean a trial is going to bring out all kinds of people. But has the trial resulted in what was supposed to be a friendly community into just another MMO gaming community?
Thanks

Re: Isle Community versus Mainland Community
Keep in mind that, as it is unlimited-time, Silan is essentially a free game. Therefore it may attract the free-game-haunting crowd. *wince*
I have Region and Universe muted on my Silan alts. It's quite tolerable that way...
The mainland community is definitely better.

Re: Isle Community versus Mainland Community
I do understand that it is basically a free game, and I know what that means
Has this free "feeder" pulled in many rude people to the mainland I guess is what I really am asking? Now my definition of rude is based directly on how the treat other members of the community.

Thanks Katriell. Seeing that you also are from Oregon I might run into you.

o_O You know, I wonder about that sometimes. It's a bit overwhelming to look at all the people I see running around IRL and wonder if I know any of them...radient wrote:Thanks Katriell. Seeing that you also are from Oregon I might run into you.

Re: Isle Community versus Mainland Community
When I first made and alt on the new player island, most of the players were just "old" players on alts and the community on RoS was like what I am used to on the mainland, fun people going out of their way to rez and help, etc. I've been off of my alt for a while, so I dont know exactly how RoS is lately, but it doesn't sound good.
I dont think that this new trial will attract ignorant people that will stay, I'm sorry but this game is just a bit to complex for those idiot "nOoBs" who think they can "pwn" everyone.
The mainland has stayed pretty normal, as far as I've seen. There has been an influx of new players, but all of the new players I've either had guilded or helped have been wonderful and like the people I'm used to.
Hope that helps, but then again, it might now make any sense at all-3am and headed towards bed.

Re: Isle Community versus Mainland Community
I can only blink in amazement at this post. I have played Guild Wars (1 year or so), SWG (for over 2 years, cancelled the day of NGE), and COH (2+ years now). I have never seen a more mature, literate, articulate, and helpful community than that of Ryzom, and like you, so far I have been only on the newbie island. I have been playing a lot of hours too... basically since the day SoR re-launched after the 4-day down time. That'll be 3 weeks this Thursday. I've logged in every day... usually twice a day (mornings for an hour before work, evenings for 2-4 hours depending on schedule and such). I have seen no evidence of immaturity at all. I know you don't say exactly what the "OMG" is in reference too but your post strongly implies you are seeing somehow far more "immaturity" in SoR than in other games. Honestly I can't imagine what you are talking about.radient wrote: The issue I am having is with the community. I play some games that have really immature gamers, and I deal with it. Are you referring to regional chat? If so, I have not seen any immaturity at all on regional chat. Regional chat generally is used to help people ("Where do I find Zun Amber?" "Is there a trick to killing Yelk?", and so forth). Sometimes people ask of the impressions other players have of the game as well ("So how do you find PVP?", "How close is the mainland to the island?" and the like). Once in a while (as I would think is inevitable in a trial area) there will be long discussions of other games (usually, WoW or SWG, though I participated in a somewhat shorter one about COH).
I really am at a loss here. The Ryzom community, including what I have seen on the newbie island, is the best I have yet to come across in any MMORPG. The people chatting in regional use actual English in their posts -- I don't think I have yet once seen any actual "leet speak", and even abbreviations seem to be kept to a minimum. There is a much higher degree of literacy and "typography" in the Ryzom community, including people generally typing full (or nearly full) sentences, with proper spelling (apart from the occasional typo), and grammar, and the like. This strikes me as symptomaic of a mature and thoughtful audience, not an immature or childish one.
The other players are generally helpful. I have seen no flames, no arguments, nothing like that. I have witnessed largely good humor, cooperation, and friendliness. I have seen no evidence of immaturity at all... There is FAR more immaturity in the GW, SWG, and especially COH communities than I have seen on newbie island in Ryzom.
So I am not sure what you are talking about... To me this is the best and by far the most mature community I have ever seen, even on newbie island.

Re: Isle Community versus Mainland Community
If any of the rude players DO make it to the mainland, you will find they get shot down pretty quickly by the community.
One thing this community is very good at is not tolerating rude or immature behaviour on the any of the chat channels or in gameplay for that matter. Any rude players are very quickly (and politely at first) asked to tone it down. If that doesn't work then a GM will invariably turn up (often alerted by a player) to MAKE them shut up.
I have to agree with the general consensus here, I haven't seen an influx of 'bad' players to the mainland, quite the opposite in fact. I think any bad element will tend to stay with the free bit and not spend money to egt to the mainland.

Re: Isle Community versus Mainland Community
So far I'm impressed by the community - despite not haveing left the starter islands:
-Every question I asked was answered.
-Every time i was looking for a party I found one.
-People heal and resurrect even if they won't get XP doing so.
-I read hardly any cool-dude smack-talk. On the rare occasion I do though somebody makes sure that's not wanted very quickly.
-In the two teams I killed the cave-bug with nearly all players waited til everyone got the quest advanced. The others announced their lack of time before they got the advance already.
