Crashing constantly under D3D

follow up post from one on general forum incase Zerlin misses it :)

since last patch client crashes constantly under D3D, if i force openGL it doesnt crash but mobs and players flicker and sometimes stay bright green for varying lengths of time, and shadows are messed up to the point i have to turn them off.

I've had this problem with openGL previously and have been using D3D for the last 6 months with np.

Nvidia 6800 Ultra 256MB
4gb ddr400
X-2 4200+
xp pro sp2
etc

tried all driver releases from current (91.31) back about 4 months all have same issues. something in last patch royally screwed D3D for me. EDIT: all spiffy now with 71.89 drivers ;)

got the fix ie openGL from Zerlin and have done a complete reinstall in the mean time, checked data, all that stuff. every other game (newer ones inc oblivion, condemmed, fear, etc) i have works fine so its not a hardware issue o.o

and the NEL assert:

I just checked out the release notes for the 91.31 drivers(120pp.!)

There is a known problem with the drivers on a dual core processor. It's listed on p15.
They give a registry work around for both D3D and OpenGL.

ohh interesting.. i started reading the release notes but got bored after page 50, will carry on... only got those drivers yesterday, earlier ones no good either sadly

Well, I installed the nvidia 91.31 drivers. I'm not having any problems with D3D,
but then my processor is'nt dual core(AMD Athlon 64 3200+)!

With OpenGL the only problem is with the shadows, but that is very bad indeed.
Instead of shadows there are just black polygons on the ground under everything.
