Useless NPCs

Post by deadwolf »

I know this issue has been addressed before, usually buried in the midst of other threads, so this thread specifically deals with one issue.

Devs, PLEASE remove so many of the "wandering" NPCs in the wilds of Atys. Anytime, anyplace I encounter these useless animated "lag beasts," my system performance immediately goes to he**. I am constantly bombarded with the "please wait" message."

I do not see the need for these characters to be out wandering the land, which leads to another point. How can these NPCs walk RIGHT THROUGH a pack of ragus or gingos and not be attacked?

But, back to the lag issue - I have a decent machine: 2.8GB processor, 512MB RAM, and GeForce 2 MMX 400 vid card, DX9.0 plus.

Thanks,

Wolf

Useles = bad, however, if they simply said something, gave clues to quests (when they're added), said hello, or even gave simple missions, they would no longer be useless. I think the amount is fine and that it seems more real wandering throught the markets, but atleast have them do something besides wander. As to usless NPCs in the wilderness, I haven't seen any yet, they're either mission givers, or patrolling tribes which, i like to watch chase the people who have pissed them off.

Yes, they should be removed or made important AND attackable by NPCs. They're not a lag issue for me at all.

I don't care about the NPCs in the wilderness, but the overabundance of NPCs in the cities (especially capital cities) is annoying as all hell. It causes bad lag and even causes the Ryzom client to crash on me sometimes - though generally only when I am running to a city to have the guards kill something I can't handle ... wish causes me to die and be un-rezzable when I log in.

So please get rid of all of the useless "filler" NPCs in the cities (or at least half of them or something).

My thoughts exactly... The wilderness doesnt bother me its the cities. I like the realism of it but a few less would be nice unless they plan on making them usefull for something? Who knows what lurks in the minds of a developer.

I'm not sure exactly what NPC's you are talking about. There are the various prospectors, scouts, suppliers, hunters, etc that wander around the zones. They give missoins and also can be receivers of various delivery tasks.

Then there are the "armies" that wander around the territory they control. These will play a bigger part once the outposts go live. I do agree these armies should do something other than walk around. They should fight off some of these aggresive mobs. I have great faction with some of the tribes and still their armies do nothing to help me.

INSIDE cities there are hordes of NPC who do absolutely nothing but walk around. They are obviously purely decorative at this point, and these are the ones that people are objecting to.

But those people objecting are a vocal minority. From the poll it seems there is a LARGE majority that have no problems with the NPCs and some even want more.

If anything, this proves that this is a dead, meaningless issue.

Seems to me that this poll asked the wrong question. From the comments here, the NPCs that people have a problem with are the hordes milling about the city, which cause the bad lag. I know, for me, that's the issue. I haven't encountered any performance problems from NPCs wandering the wilderness, but maybe I just haven't explored far enough.

I don't think, however, from the posts I've read elsewhere about the lag in the cities, that the people objecting are a minority. But, I am biased, of course, b/c to me it is a problem. I certainly don't feel it is a "dead, meaningless issue."

I only picked the not a problem choice because of the question, he is asking about npc's out and about NOT the ones in the city. I have no problems at all with the ones that roam the wilds.

The excessive amounts of npcs roaming around in the cities is just rediculous. I don't have any issues with lag (new souped up gaming comp) but getting around them sometimes is difficult and frustrating since I know they don't have a purpose as of yet.

You do have a nice system there deadwolf, but you might think about updating your video card. You have a card that was designed more for a 1G machine not a 2.8G one. Would help alot on the lag you are getting, can't imagine how hard it is for you to get around in the city. :(
