Inspiration and vision

Post by cloudy97 »

When I started I loved reading the visions of this game and especially the developer's inspirations. Like this:
http://www.ryzom.com/news/letter wrote: The true destiny of SoR is not just about Atys (the name of the game doesn’t contain Atys for a reason). I’d rather call it a Space Opera or a multiverse. My influences here are clearly not from the gaming industry (even if I’ve played a lot more than my parents would imagine). I am after works like Dune (Herbert) or the Foundations (Asimov). I’m also very much into mangas and animes, such as Ghost in the Shell, Apple Seed (the latest anime adaptation is good, btw), Nausicaa (the manga is more complete than the anime), Mononoke Hime, et al. And I like to mix the genres. I find them very rich in contrasts and I think it is possible to mix genres, as long as it is done with proper coherence in both the looks and the background/story. I really like that sort of contrast (techno vs magic), because it releases a lot of energy and pure emotional energy is what MMORPGs have to deliver.
For SoR, I have several planets in mind, plus a space dimension. The space dimension could be compared to a mix of Harlock (anime with space pirates fighting imperial fleets for the future of mankind), Cowboy Bebop (anime about mercenaries) and the Stargate TV series.
I haven't figured out how to link it to the proper letter, but its from David Cohen Corval and posted Thursday, 30 June, 2005. http://www.ryzom.com/news/letter He also stated Sir Richard Attenborough as a mayor influence for the game (http://rpgvault.ign.com/articles/370/370726p2.html) but I feel more like Steve Irwin (the Crocodile Hunter).

Nausicaä and Dune is still the strongest images I see before me as I play Ryzom and I really hope we will see the game form into a space opera with more planets (and yes, even interesting PVP between them). Also the Nomad Fyros with moving houses would be awesome to see, I hope the engine can handle such big animated objects.

Thosam hinted that I should see the CGI movie "Kaena - the Prophecy" and wow - who ripped off who? Doesn't really matter, but they are VERY alike. If you haven't seen it yet, please do.

While the Kami is similar to the tree spirits in Princess Mononoke I find similarities between Karavan and "Raelism" (usually called the "UFO Cult" in newspapers here in Sweden) but maybe Dune's specialized superhumans are more accurate.

So please give me a list of books/comics/movies to read while the game is down and tell me what inspires you and your character.

Yeah, just saw "Kaena, the Prophecy" two days ago and it´s pretty cool. :) And damn if Kaena does not look a bit like a young Jena in the end :D

I can recomend a few great comics : "Lanfeust of Troy" , "Troll of Troy" and "Lanfeust of the Stars".

The World Troy is not Atys but I´m pretty sure that some of our charakter designs are inspired by this great french Comics. They´re a hilarous read and I think you´ll be as hooked on them as I have. ;)
Sorry I don´t now the French or Swedish Titles.
But any good Comic-Store should have them!

Interesting topic Ulani. ;)

'Kaena - The Prophecy', no doubt about it that this has the biggest resemblance.

Unmistakebly there' s references to Dune; the Karavan's 'siltsuits', the Draconic Ashes resemble the Spice which awaken inner strengths and capabilities after prolonged exposure (guessing here though),...

It is possibly that is purely because the setting is rather post-apocalyptic that I feel a sort of link with Interplay's CRPG Fallout's setting; the Karavan could somehow be linked to The Brotherhood of Steel, keepers of knowledge and technology; the descent of the chosen few of Homins into the Prime Roots sounds again a lot like the rush for the Vaults; followed by the resettling and rebuilding of the civilisations; and then there' s Goo creatures, magic, ... mutations anyone?

And who could forget about Starship Troopers? :p

Yeah all of you is right but this question is recently on my mind:
What is a future for our beloved SoR when David Cohen Corval left Nervax ?
Will his genius idea be still developing (8 planets ect) or all plans were simply reduced to R2 as "to be or not to be for SoR"?
I still have Uber faith and love for game but I'm not a teenager anymore (lol) and fast and multiple affairs with games are not so easy acceptable for my heart (might get a stroke ie)- the point is I would be more than grateful to hear from Devs if we should start packing and get aquitance with the thought that in 3-6-12 months we will became homeless travelers drifting through the universe of virtual entertaiment ?????????????

While a bit off topic, Ciri ;) I have confidence in what Ring will bring the company. While it probably will be a great toy for the players here it will probably be easier to sell the engine to other devs. Imagine that you can "just" swap out the graphics and make a new MMO in record time, using the Ring for leveldesign.

And Nevrax, if the Saga wont continue with other planets please please please don't tell us. Let us dream that it will :D (Not that Atys is a bad place)

BTW... would the Sap in this universe be equivalent to Star Wars' midichlorians?

i might be wrong here, but from the news post back then it didn't seem like he left, but merely went off the payroll.

I really want to see that 'Kaena - the Prophecy' but I can only find it in region 1 NTSC dvd. My TV doesn't do NTSC :( Would my PC?

There's definitely a region 2 version, sold in Germany and I guess in France, as well...
Your PC should be able to play any region DVDs, but your DVD drive might not. Most drives are rigged to allow only a few changes of region - 5 in most cases, I guess - but there may be software and/or drive firmware to circumvent this limitation. Be sure to check the legal situation in your country though, it may be illegal in several countries (especially the US of A, but others as well) to use various software. Welcome to the corporation world of software patents and licenses

Thanks, but it's not the region that's the problem. Just wondering whether the NTSC encoding (as opposed to PAL which we use in the UK) is going to cause any problems.
