a very odd problem
a very odd problem
ok my experiance first started when i tried to download this game.half way through downloading my entire internet connection was disconnected and i didnt think much of it.i restarted the download the second time and when it reached 99% it froze my entire computer.third time lucky eh?well apparently not
the third time was a shocker.imediatly after i finaly got it to download my computer became laggy as hell and explorer was using all of my memory.(2 gigs of ram)i just asumed i may have gotten a virus on my computer and spent the next 3 hours running every program(i have just about all of them)and came up empty.after deleting every recent program id installed and doing a full disk scan and defragmentation and basicly every thing i could think of i gave up.after waiting a hour or so my computers speed returned to normal and i tried to install ryzom.i got to the screen where it asks u to choose where to install and after id chosen the defualt directory and clicked install it said 'cannot find files or drive or something like that.i repeated the attempt 3 times before deleting the unzipped files and clicking the file to extract them again when my computer crashed once more.as soon as i logged back in i deleted the ryzom file and after waiting about ten minutes my computer froze.i cnrl alt del it and shut down two drwtsn that were frozen and finaly the ryzom file was gone.my computer nowsrun as it did before downloading this game.now im sure your first thought is scan for viruses upgrade your computer bla bla bla.well im a experianced computer user and have even consulted several techs and ive been assured i have the maximum security possible for a civilian.my computer has many times the req needed to run this game and have standard hardware/software that many people use.im completely baffled and i bet you are too.but i hope theres somebody out there with the answer to my problem.ive signed up for 1 week free and am prepared to pay if i like this game.but if i cant even get it working im going to feel very cheated as ive installed at least 50 other mmorpgs and only had one problem before that was very minor.sorry for the length of this post but its a very odd problem and without the full info i dont see how anyone can figure out what the problem is

Re: a very odd problem
The symptoms you're describing sound more like what I experienced when I have a hard drive or controller that's on the verge of failure. If you have something like Norton Utilities, run one of their advanced disk repair tools and check for (newly exposed) bad spots on your drive.

Re: a very odd problem
Explorer is one of the worst things that you can use for downloading large files. It uses temporary space in your profile and if you download to your desktop then that amount is doubled. The freeze at 99% is due to IE trying to move the file from the temp space to it's final destination and your antivirus is scanning the thing to death. It has to uncompress 4.5 GB or stuff. Again this uses more of your temp space.
Your best bet is to get a proper download app or browser. Or use the Bit Torrent version of the download.
Downloading Ryzom would not cause your system to slow down for an hour or so. I would suggest that you may have some intermittant hardware problems like the last person suggested. I have a hard drive in my system that likes to squeal loudly and throw an error or two every month or so. I haven't replaced it yet but I do have a spare sitting around for when the inevitable finally happens.
