I partly agree with you. I will NOT play an MMO game that has no PvP. It's just pointless. But I'm also an explorer and a bit of an achiever (not too much, too lazy heh), so I love PvE content as well. And fighting in groups of real people cooperatively beats the pants off of any single player game I agree 100%.

Ax
And that's what I'd play FPS games for, a quick fix of actual competition where skills actually plays a reasonable role. You don't get that in (most) MMORPGs, it's usually more like top trumps, or possibly rock-paper-scissors where you can only ever draw one symbol.

We aren't going anywhere quickly.

I have ryzom in my blood. I will keep my subs going until Nev announce the end.

The game and community is solid. Theres just no money coming in. I wish the game will keep going for a few years yet. But it pains me to say , I don't think it will see christmas 2007, I sincerely hope I'm wrong!

Why play a PvE game? I'm a tabletop RPGer, I come to an mmoRPG for the world, for the cooperative play, for the community, for all the RPG aspects. RPGs are non-competetive, cooperative games - that's the major part of their appeal and what (can) differentiate them from the usual leaderboard and hypercompetetive crud you get playing FPS etc.

What's the point? To be a hero and advance the story, not to 'pwn'.

As you get older and people get families and things it's much harder to get people together for a tabletop session, that's part of the reason so many TT gamers end up migrating to mmoRPGs. A lot of other people come across from those competetive online games and both sets have very different expectations and needs. It IS possible to meet both.
Ahh oki.. i can see where you come from
You are an RP'er... Roleplaying for me in online games stands for having a role in a team and not be an actor or something. Thats diffrent in tabletop games but there the atmosphere is diffrent too.. i dont look for that in online games to be true. And regarding RP'ers in online games... i have seen some really bad actors too thinking whatever mighty dudes they are and acting so cheap that it made me laugh sometimes. I like the PvP part in these games for the team spirit that you can develop... I dont like the duel stuff or something like that.. Duels are good to train your abilties but what i look for is Mass PvP and an organizing a team where everyone has a role ... (tank, healer, mezzer etc.)... sure you can have that in PvE too.. but the real kick is in PvP for me. Thats all..
And trust me i am not a young kid or something.. just playing online games to fight other players and not NPC's ...

uhhmm shooters dont have this rock-paper-scissor thing.. thats why i like pvp in mmorpgs.. :P
Just get over it.. some ppl love PvP in these games and i am glad that AoC will be a full flaged PvP game and not some /yawning fight NPCs and grind all the time game.. I wanna fight for territory .. live and die for my team/faction.
You know why Eve is soo successfull ? Cause the Mass PvP .. Fleet battles are awesome... Its all about tactics ...
In shooters its all about ping and aiming... i have played shooters for several years.. still play some but i seriously enjoy PvP in MMORPGs more then anything else.. however it needs to be good featured and not some halfbaked crap like in Ryzom. Personally i think they should make this game PvE again so all these discussions have an end and the ppl that left cause of PvP come back again ... and besides that its awesome chatprogram after all :P

If the desire of the PvP crowd truly is challenge, and not 'pwning' then there is a halfway house solution which I think would work.

Human opponents think, right? The challenge is that they learn tactics, do unpredictable things and so forth.

The problem for many of us with PvP is we don't actually want to fight our fellow players, we don't like the one-upmanship, the community destroying competition, the smack talk and everythign else that goes with it.

Three solutions I see (Not for Ryzom) are...

1. GM/Guide controlled mobs - The guides can posess and control mobs/groups during events in whatever game, controlling them, springing surprises, using powers in interrelated ways etc to provide a more challenging event.

2. Have a dual login. You can either login as your player, or as a monster NPC (randomly determined) - similar to volunteering to 'monster' in a LARP, when you login as a monster you get random control of an NPC/Mob somewhere in the land and get to control them until they get killed, when you get the chance to spawn as another one. You could earn monstering points which could then be traded in for things for your actual character.

3. PvP/PK that actually has negative consequences for the person doing it.
