A prologue of sorts, part 1

Post by ichigono »

The Undersprings, some time ago...

After porting into the Prime Roots and regrouping, the warriors picked their way to a prime harvesting spot. "Ok, Kit," Sangian, the group's leader barked, "remember, you're here to dig. We holler for you to run, you run your tail end off, you got me?"

Her face a mask of unfeeling stone, she replied, "Yes, San, whatever you say."

San smiled at her briefly. "We need that Zun amber, Kit; if we fail to get it, we won't be able to get anymore for a long time. Leave any fighting to the rest of us, ok? You're a little weak to be fighting down here."

Even though his words were kind, they still rankled Kityara's Fyros heart; maybe she wasn't the mightiest warrior, but she could fight, and she could also cast spells as well, perhaps keeping the warriors on their feet long enough to pull victory out of the claws of defeat. Still, Sangian was her best friend, and she didn't want to let him down, so she resolved to obey his request.

As they arrived at the harvest spot, Sangian began arranging the warriors around her dig site to post lookout. The Kitin loved to patrol this area, so it was thought a good idea to post watch for them, so that they could be prepared for battle at a moment's notice, protecting the one whose purpose here was vital.

Meanwhile, Kityara began to prospect for the amber, brow furrowed in concentration as she bent over her task, pick resting lightly in one hand like a sword, ready to wrestle that amber out of the crust. Finding a good source, she began to dig, and dig, and dig...

How it happened, no one could tell; perhaps one of the guards was feeling drowsy from lack of activity, or perhaps no one was at fault. But, one of the guards screamed, "Kitin, incoming fast!" The others turned to see, and sure enough, a patrol was coming in hot and heavy; there was no chance that they would escape detection.

Grabbing her by the shoulder, Sangian pulled Kityara to her feet. "Run, Kit, run!" he screamed at her. She looked once in the direction that the other guards were facing, and she felt a momentary twinge of fear as she turned to run as the rest of her group faced to meet the oncoming charge, yelling battlecries of "For Fyros!"

Kityara ran for a few seconds, then, her Fyros pride forced her to stop and turn around. At that moment the kitin plowed into the warriors, making their own hideous battle noises. Within an instant, Kityara had donned her magic amplifiers and began casting healing spells on her friends. Perhaps she couldn't fight, but she could help those who could, after all.

She watched as, one after the other, they fell, until only Sangian was left standing. She managed a few good heals, watching as he fought the kitin with a maniacal gleam in his eyes, striking out at all who got close enough to him. For a moment, their eyes met, and she saw an instant of disappointment, followed by pride, in his eyes. She'd failed to obey, but she hadn't abandoned her friends; she was Fyros, and a warrior at heart.

After a few more heals, she fell to the ground, drained of sap and not far from death herself, as she'd been fueling her spells with her own life force in order to keep Sangian alive. Dejected, she watched as Sangian fell to the kitin, and she began to weep uncontrollably, muttering, "I failed you, San," over and over again. As Sangian fell, the kitin looked her way and began to swarm towards her. By this point, she didn't care, her eyes had run out of tears, so she hopped to her feet and armed her pike, not wanting to die on her knees.

For death was what awaited her; it didn't take long for the kitin to overpower her. Sangian had been right; she was no match for these horrible creatures, not in the least. As she lay dying, she watched as the kitin moved on, resuming their patrol. As they moved out of sight, she thought herself a complete failure, too weak to even curse the kitin as the left.

Suddenly, she saw a shimmering figure approach her. A voice, at once playful and motherly, said, "No, Kityara, you will not die this day." She felt herself wrapped in an indescribable warmth, floating free in space. "It isn't your strength of arm or mind that we cherish, for there are many stronger, but the strength of your heart. There will come a time when that strength will be needed even more, for your kind are fracturing themselves, going to war amongst themselves when they should be battling the true enemy, using their beliefs as a rallying cry. We know you follow us, the Kami, but we sense in you a curiosity, and a willingness to ask questions. Perhaps your questions, and your love of all hominkind, will bring those who worship the false god Jena to realize the error of their ways. Now, sleep, young homin, rest. When the time comes, you will awaken."

Kityara felt herself smile briefly as her eyes closed of their own accord. With a wave of its arm, the Kami caused Kityara to vanish from the face of Atys, to return when she might do some good...

The followup to this is An Awakening. It might've been good to put the character's name in the names of the posts, huh? *hehehe*
