No decorative dyes or clothes?

I'm a veteran MMO player who is willing to give the game a chance to grow, but my wife is a little less tolerant of "rough edges" than me. And when she looks at me playing Ryzom, she says "Does everybody have to look alike?"

And honestly I don't have an answer. People run around either naked or wearing the same armor. She thinks the character creator is great, but once you're in the game everybody is hidden behind identical armor, or butt naked.

Is there any option to "dye" armor at the minimum, and how soon can we expect silly pointless fluff clothing? See Anarchy Online, if you want a fantastic example of such fluff. Trust me, if you put a little effort into creating some decorations, it will go a long way to win casual players.

It would be *perfect* if there were recipes for dress/fun clothing added to the recipe lists, and different harvested materials would generate different colors...

Thanks for listening, and hopefully some of this already exists without me knowing.

I'm not a crafcter, so I don't know the details, but there are tons of different patterns and colors you can apply to any of the 12 graphics for each body part. Getting into the levels where crafters can easily do this (as well as contact other races), I'm seeing people starting to look very varied.

I haven't tried yet, but I've heard that armor made primarily with kippee parts comes out purple. That would be my preference though, to have the components somewhat determine the final look. That would encourage people to experiment and mix and match for just the right look.

Hi,
Depending on what materials are used to craft the armor, it will have different colors. When you have a raw material, look at its info and it will usually have a color listed. For example, redhot sap is usually green. When crafting, whatever the majority of materials' color are, that will be the color of the armor. This does not work on weapons, which only come in the standard color.
In regards to your comment on style of armor, I don't think you can customize them other than color. There are the 3 types (light, medium, heavy) which all look different. Each race has a different style as well, so I guess that makes a total of 12 different styles of armor.
I haven't seen any decorative clothing yet, but maybe it is in the works. Maybe they will come up with some more styles of armor as well.

You can creat clothings of different colors by using the appropriate materials. All mats have a color, if the maiority of the mats you are using are blue you have (usually) a blue armor.

Accessories are sadly not ingame - the closest thing here are med (lvl50) & high qual (lvl 150) weapon & armor plans. Items created with those have the same stats as normal ones, but look somewhat better. Only different textures, though, and in some cases the change is minimal.

Aha thanks for that advice. I've only done a bit of weapon crafting, and didn't realize that colors were already available for armor. Well if they already have colors in place, adding some decorative items should not be too difficult :)

IIRC there are 9 different armors per realm and 8 colors total so far in game. That would make 288 different armor skins.

Colors are:
Beige, Green, Purple, Red, Blue, Turquoise, Black, White

Armors are:
Light
Medium
Heavy
MQ Light
MQ Medium
MQ Heavy
HQ Light
HQ Medium
HQ Heavy

That's a lot of initial combos.

Well, you can make different color armor; although the process seems a bit rough or random. Certain mats will give the armor a different color, but there's not much indication of what mat will do what. You have to discover by trial and error. There's nothing as simple as a "choose color" option, which would definitely be nice.

I agree with you on the fluff. SWG is another MMORPG that had great fluff, as you call it. Not only was there a ton of variety of clothes and colors of clothes, but character creation gave unrivaled options. Everything down to lip color was selectable. You could make a short, fat Twi'lek or an emaciated, eight-foot Wookie; whatever you like. For me, SWG's character creation process is the standard by which all others are measured. Too bad the power-leveling and l33t attitudes of players spoiled that game...

But, I digress. My point, if I have one, is that I agree that eye candy is important in a game like this. Especially, for me--I want my character to truly look unique; and everyone else's as well. I think Ryzom is about average as far as that goes; about on the level of Horizons, or perhaps a small step above. I'm sure they're not going to go back and tweak with the character creation process to add lip color and optional eyebrow piercings, but the devs could step it up a notch easily with your suggestion of dyes and a variety of clothing styles. Thanks for bringing this up.

Don't forget all the different multi-color patterns, which our crafters are just now getting into the levels to start playing with 8)

I'm all for clothes and bangles, believe me. I stuck with Star Wars: Galaxies for a year and had a wardrobe large enough to kill an elephant if dropped from sufficient height (the wardrobe, not the elephant, though the latter would work as well). That said, I believe art of that type is one of the more difficult things to add because it's not a static object. It has to be mapped so as to fit a short chubby Zorai woman, a tall plump Matis man, a reed-thin Fyros man, a tall Tryk-...err, well a not-as-short-as-some Tryker woman, and all variations in between. Now add lighting effects and some other stuff I don't know about because I'm not a graphic designer. It's a lot of fiddly bits and adjustments and pixel-tweaking, though, I'm sure of it.

In the various MMOs I've played, the art elements have always taken the longest to produce. I would absolutely -love- it if we got frilly things and macho things and casual frocks and all the rest. The skill system certainly seems to be designed to make the inclusion of such things possible (I'm sure I read somewhere that they were adding more hairstyles and a skill branch for cosmetic modification). I do think those things will probably be awhile in coming, however.

With regard to the armor, you probably already know this [EDIT: clearly you DO already know this, since 7 people who type faster than I do already told you /end EDIT], but armor can be made in different colors by using a majority of materials that are the color you like. Granted, there aren't a whole lot of colors to choose from at first, but there is a bit of wiggle room; royal blue, purple, forest green, beige, black, white, red, etc. Add to that those multicolored patterns mentioned above. Anyway, I'm in full support of your cause. Little details like that definitely add more appeal to a game for me. Until those details make themselves available, though, let your wife know that she'll be able to rescue helpless boys from packs of howling gingos. I did that just the other day and I found it to be quite empowering. :)
