Some gameplay questions from a beginner!

Post by boxtrip »

I've been having a blast on a newbie island today with the free trial. I have several questions on the skill trees. BTW: is there a search function here? couldn't find it!

1. I noticed the game is very... strange, the creatures weapon names, etc... I also saw you get guns later in the game? I also saw some things in screenshots that look a bit high tech... Doesn't that "weird up" the game too much? swords, armour and... guns? launchers? Is this implemented in a believeable manner?

2. Some upgrades to your character like hitpoints and metabolism seem to be available from all 4 skill branches. Am I correct in assuming that if I want to be a fighter, I should get all my hitpoints, metabolism, etc. uppgrades from the OTHER skill trees, so I can save more FIGHTING skill points for offensive weapon moves? I guess, given enough time, you could max everything, but that's gonna take a lot of time, no? It seems like a good strategy to do it this way.

3. Does your character have stats? I couldn't find a window for stats...just hitpoints, sap(funny name for mana!), etc... There are upgrades to stats, so they must be some where?

4. How does dual wield work? I seem to do just the damage from my main. I unequip my dagger offhand and I do the same damage...

Thanks in advance if someone bothers to answer my questions :)

search this forum/thread drop down(s) at top of pages :p

1) kinda makes sense. lorepages are good place for background

2) hmm depends. you will have plenty of spare sp (points to spend) in everything but craft sooner or later. i try to keep spending from the branches i earned it until later levels.

3) P (and complete list of keys by pressing K, u can also make up handy macro's there)

4) you do default damage from the second weapon, if u check the sys info (W) you should be able to see it there.

5) hi and welcome ;)

Ryzom isn't entirely fantasy or science fiction, but a hybrid: science-fantasy. :) The year is 2533, and Atys is a living, alien planet. It's essentially a giant plant, so everything native to it is organic - no stone or metal. The Karavan are from somewhere else, so their technology and machines are the only metal on Atys. There are no elves, dwarves, etc., and homins aren't human but may have been at some point in the past.

This makes Ryzom unique among MMORPGs. The lore is quite deep and interesting, in my opinion. Instead of a static storyline being fed through quests, the story evolves through live events, both GM- and player-run.

Magic energy is called sap because homins, living on a plant-planet as they do, have sap within them parallel to blood (at least, I think that's how it works, someone correct me if I'm wrong). They also have a "nanoseed" in them that allows them to respawn at the point of death and communicate with each other telepathically.

Welcome to our Giant Root Ball! :)

I think the others have answered your questions, except I'd empahsize what Jelathnia said: this ain't your run-of-the-mill MMORPG!

Once you're comfortable with the controls (and any initial customization you've done) move on over to the mainland, plenty of folks there to help you out!

Don't be afraid to holler in /region for assistance/heals/rez's/info etc. Or use /tell to hold a private conversation with an individual.

1. The guns are definately not high tech, more like some kind of rubberband operated toy shooting a projectile made of teeth or something. :D

And yes, Ryzom is strange. Most things do seem logical in a weird way, like a mystery waiting to be solved. Welcome to the plant!

Initially how you spend your points can make life easier for you, thankfully there is not really a way to nerf yourself and need a reroll. Once you have decided what you want to be when you grow up, focus your points there. Later when your skill trees split and you do other things to try, use that SP to buy the skills you don't really need (ie. you won't need bleed if your going to use a mace etc etc).

As stated, the dagger in your left hand will do damage, only it will be the default damage for the weapon as the dagger (in left hand) does not receive ANY bonuses from the stanza your using. ALSO keep in mind you will be leveling 2 seperate trees in this manner (1h & close combat when the trees split) and progress slower, but raising both skills increases damage on both hands.

If I remember correctly, Fight branches off into 1h melee, 2h melee and ranged at some point (20 or 50, one of those, I think). You can use Fight skill points to buy both the stat upgrades and the combat moves eventually. If you plan to focus on one specific weapon, for example, you can level a different weapon and use the sps from leveling that to buy stat increases, and use the sps from leveling your primary weapon to buy combat moves.

Of course, there's a case to be made for varying your weapons. Different MOBs are resistant to different types of damage, so, in a fight, if you notice that you're not doing as much damage as you think you should, try switching weapons. That's one thing I would keep in mind if you intend to be a strong melee fighter :) Keep that MOB's attention focused on you so your elementalist buddies can nuke it to death *hehehe*
