Tried SoR a year ago, wondering how it's changed since then

Post by joeburns »

Hi, homins,

I played SoR for a few months over a year ago, then had to leave the game, since money was tight (I'd lost my job *sigh*). Now, I have a new job and am nearly in a position to play again, and I was wondering if I should.

So, I have some questions to pose. Here goes...

1. I have another account that I could resubscribe (I think), with a Fyros gal with mid-level skills in fighting and magic, both elemental and healing, and around 170 in Desert Foraging. However, when I knew I was going to quit, I gave all her gear away, leaving her with 14M dappers. So, given that the game may have changed a great deal since I played last, should I consider reactivating the old account (if I can, that is), or just start fresh? I imagine I would need to spend some time relearning how to do everything anyway. Then again, 14M dappers, I THINK, should outfit her decently, if not super-well, right?

2. My old character also had some mid-level crafting skills. Is there any market for medium armor, or is it simply a skill point sinkhole? I can think of some reasons why someone may want it, but I also think I may be in the minority. If I play that character, I might focus on weaponry, and large weaponry at that and give up on the medium armor if there's no market.

3. If I decide to start fresh, clean slate and all, at what point should I leave newbie island? I've seen where the devs are working on a united noob island and frankly, I would LOVE to see it, but I don't think it's going to be put out before I create my new character. I might create a character when they DO implement it just so I can see it, but in the meantime, I wanna pway ;)

4. Is there any reason to select a specific race, aside from looks at this point? I might stay with Fyros, or go with Tryker, because I like the way those gals look from the rear. (If I'm going to be looking at the character's backside while I'm playing, I may as well enjoy the view, right? *hehehe*)

5. Since I'm an American, I imagine I'll have to play on the English server. I have dialup access, and before, I had what I thought was decent connectivity (some 'Please Wait', not often). How would playing on the English server affect that? I don't have a top of the line machine, but I think I have enough RAM for the game to be playable (784M atm), at least to start until I can get more.

I think that's it for now. I hope to see some nice folks in game soon :)

1. if i were you i would resub the old account. That way you can create a nooby in a different slot and still have the opportunity to log in with the old char and possibly be recognised ;)

2. I wouldn't say Med armour was as sought after as an amp crafter yet should you join a guild where a medium armourer is needed im sure you will find your place.

3. This is entirely up to you. The two common responses to this question are, when you reach level 20 in your skills or when you feel that you have a good grasp of the interface. I would say my response would be "when you feel like leaving" ;)

4. Yeah there is no difference between the races. The only difference you might feel with a tryker is that it takes ages to swim everywhere!

5. IM from the UK so probably not the most qualified person to respond, yet dialling the UK really shouldn't cause much grief at all. 768 odd mb of ram is about the standard to play ryzom well, this has been upped by nevrax who previously said 512mb was enough yet now its evident that lag in major cities will happen at this level. 1gb+ RAM for the win :)

ps, if you decide to go for the fyros say hi to hermionie, hermia and miowne on the nooby island :D

pps, welcome back :D

Welcome back!

I just wanted to say that there is a large market for medium armor. It's had various improvements made to it since you left, including double HP boost and decreased action malus.

My heart is warmed by the response I've gotten so far, thanks, guys. The profile for the old account is still there, so, I might do as the first replier said and resub that account, and just create a noob so I can relearn the interface and all that.

Another question occurred to me, though. Since I'm on dialup, patching will take a good deal of time. I still have the CDs I originally installed from, so my next question is, which would be better, patch-wise, to use those CDs (over a year old), or download the executable and patch from that? Would it take longer to download the 1.5Mb executable and then patch from that, or to use the CDs and patch from that? I'd rather play sooner than later, if you catch my drift *hehehe*

One of the things I noticed near the time that I left was that, for one reason or another, many of the folks on my Friends list were leaving the game. If anyone remembers Kityara, I wouldn't mind hearing from you :)

Take care, all, and God bless.

I will have to agree with Sehraci on this one (and not only because she is my supplier)! ;) Medium armor is all the rage these days, and lots of folks have come up with great outfits combining medium with either light or heavy armor.

So with that in mind, I'd say start up your old account, and of course there are always more slots for new charaters.

Also, if the medium armor no longer interests you, I'd say there's a pretty good market for just about anything craftable these days. Lots of improvements have been made with the ranged weapons, too.

As for the dial up, I'm not sure, but good luck! And welcome back!

Edit: just saw your second post. I'd suggest intalling from the cds and patching. It will take a long time to download the file from the website and if it's corrupted for some reason it will just be time wasted. ( I speak from experience, but from cable modem... i can only imagine it'd be worse with dial up. ;) )

Another question (boy, can I ask 'em, huh? *hehehe*): Would it be worthwhile to do quests? In other games, I rather enjoyed doing that, as much for the reward as for the intriguing story. On my old character, I didn't do very many, as they seemed to be too simple. What kind of lore can I look for? And would it be preferable to do them as a noobie or as the old character?

Ok, so, that was two questions ;P They are kinda related, though, so, there ya go ;)
