Ship Ahoy!

Post by Tidings »

News from the Lakelands today:

Homins, it has been reported that the Tryker inventor, named The Skipper is very close to finalizing his great invention. The Skipper was seen this week traveling the lands asking Homins for final ideas and details that would allow him to complete an astounding new project. Please add your own ideas to this post and help out the Skipper.

The following is what The Skipper has been reported to have said;

Let me tell you a tale of our ancestors, in a time before the Great Swarming. A tale that will let you all know of what knowledge was lost to the Tryker race, those long years ago.

It was a time when there were SHIPS, Ships that sailed the waterways of the Lakeland’s, Ships that carried commerce from city to city and delivered the crafted work of the Tryker artisans from Dainty Isle Workshop and the other workshops and trading posts that are in ruins now, to the great markets of the Tryker race.

Ships that carried all the races and their packers and mounts in comfort, unlike what we experience these days, having to run and swim to every point on the map. Those Ships were fabulous to behold, bright pennants flying from their masts and colorful sails dyed in all the colors that could be imagined.

Why there were even pirate vessels that preyed upon the merchant ships, freebooters that lived the Tryker dream, being accountable to no one but themselves. It was a richer time, a time of adventure, of heroism and bravery. Things I sadly feel are lacking in our poor existence these days here in the Lakelands.

And that is the point of my little tale my friends, for I intend to find the old knowledge or invent from the start, those Ships of the old days!

I have been experimenting in secret trying to find out what floats and what does not, I come before you to ask if any of you have any ideas or have come across old drawings or bark parchments that tells of these things?

As an example for you, let me tell you of a few things I did early in my experimentation. I tried to tie a bunch of stones together, well that sank right away.

Next I tied a lot of dead Yubos together; they floated, kinda but started to smell real badly, then sank in a mass of bubbles. Heh, well you get the idea.

I thank you in advance for your help, I will keep you informed of my progress, I think from what you have told me and what I have learned for myself, that I can begin construction of the Ship now….

I’ll call it… The Ora, I think, as it will be small but strong and able to withstand the storms that plague the Lakelands.

Fare well my friends, I’ll be seeing you around the Lakelands.
Heed my words!

I vaguely remember as a child, sat on the shores of Fairhaven, the elders would give us some oil (peelan?), some skin which had spots on and a small lump of wood which smelt funny. Using the small penknife like tool we would spend hours shaping the wood and then scraping out a hollow inside. The dry skin would then be softened with the oil and stretched around the outside of the wood and left to dry in the sun. As it dried out it seemed to bond tight to the wood. We would then have great fun putting them in the water and watching them bob up and down, ah fond memories indeed.

SvS anyone? :D

Could you harness the existing Tryker wind technology to provide a means to propel the ship through the water at greater speed?

Now if those ships have some good bulk, there'd be a very good use for launchers :D

Most intriguing. You must tell me what these "stone" things are and where you discovered them!

Perhaps we can tie them to the feet of some Trykers and allow them to explore the floors of their lakes. While I find it rather difficult to breathe with my face submerged, the Trykers don't seem to mind.

Surely a stretched out Bodokin hide on a canvas would make a excellent colourful sail :) . The buoyancy, hmm, hollow things usually float, has the Skip experimented with the bamboo type plants that can be found around the lakelands? dunno if they`d make a great ship, but would make a nice raft

(Touche, Sehraci, I noticed that too. XD I wonder what they meant by that. Since some people insist on using terms like "rock" and "stone," I've come to assume it means "dense clump of bark." Or dried mud.)

Maybe they meant fruit stones, like are found in peaches (do they have stones?) etc :P

Looks like a fun event :)
