Patching for new install - painful

Post by crousetx »

I'm on dialup, but I managed to reel in the 1.5 gig install file over several days.

I expected some patching, but I'm a bit confused by what I've encountered. The launcher checks to see what needs to be patched, and then shows me some optional files that I may choose to omit. After doing so, I'm left with appx 10 Mb of patch to download, or so the launcher indicates.

Once the patching process began, however, I have a line at the top that says 0/10 Mb and then beneath, it said something along the lines of "1/11...<filename>...128kb/65 Mb" and then proceeded to download a 65 Mb file. I disconnected once, around 20Mb in, and had to start over, got the file the 2nd time. Afterwards the line at the top indicates some small amount of progress, like "1.2/10 Mb" or thereabouts. Then I launch into another download, this time "2/11" and 80-something Mb. Files this size, they take several hours each...though I guess I have no way of knowing how big the rest of those files are, this could take a few more days the way things are looking.

And I still don't have a clue what that 10 Mb patch size is leading me on about.

Can anyone tell me what I've got left to download? If I've got another 500Mb or whatever of downloading left, then I need to say the heck with it for now, I've got other things I'd like to do with my connection.

I'd appreciate any clarification that could be offered.

Yeah, theres alot more patching afterwards. It was prolly giving you the reading of just one small patch out of the many it needs to d/l & apply. = (
May want to wait until you have plenty of time. Do keep with it though, its worth it in the end I sware! :D

There are around 300 Mb of downloads (maybe nearer 350) with the optional patches. And you should really apply those if you possibly can.

Those buttons don't really work anymore. They just change the total patch size text these days, not the real size of the patch... :)

Yet I do not understand where the problem lies with providing the patches as downloadable files, so someone with a fast connection could get them, or you could get them at work and transfer them home... would solve the problem for many a user...

My suggestion is, find someone with a fast internet connection, install there, patch, compress the installed game (into multiple volumes if you use CDs - fits on two) and unpack it over your original installation on the destination PC... not the easiest way, and probably not supported, but in my experience the quickest and least painful way.

Oh, and welcome to Atys! :)

Welcome to Atys. :D

NOTE TO DEVS: when you patch the game, update the INSTALLER! How hard can it be????????? It's not like you're doing loads of patches these days! If you don't want to do it as soon as you patch (in case you have to patch the patch), wait a week THEN update it. The installed program should be no more than a week behind the patch process!! It would save a lot of moans on here!

It didn't turn out to be such a big deal in the end. The real obstacle was the larger files, and in getting them in one shot without disconnecting. It took a few tries but I got them.

I should have my boy Arlo on the mainland in the next day or so. Thanks for your replies :)
