Here's why,
The crystals help to gain faster xp so new players or older players can get their skills up to a level at wich it would be fun, eg, not getting killed in 1 hit but 2 if you enter the PR

Make a better then basic item in a sensible amount of time, pick more then 2 mats in one digs to make it all a bit more faster and in that way more rewarding en enjoyable.
In any group of people most of the time everybody can do the basic things. (Like we can all type but we can't all write a good novel or poem, some have it some don't) The catalists increase the rate of learning for all skills where it imo should only be those basic skills the ones you learn from your tribe/guild when young. To become a master in something takes time, research, effort and dedication. (One can learn verry fast how to use a paint brush and paint but learning to create a _good_ fresco on a church roof is a much harder process)
The catalists should work for skills below a certain level, wich level, I don't know. It would help new players to catch up, old players to enjoy leveling a new branch but not help people to zoom to level cap.
