To use the special ï character, hold down the ALT key and press 0239 on the number pad.

Should work on Windows XP at least, not sure about other versions / operating systems.

Just a little tip.

EDIT: To access the list of special characters, in Windows XP, click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Character Map.

Works a treat in Notepad/Word etc., thanks Kat I remember using that for ASCII in the MS-DOS days, never realised you could enter UNICODE/UTF chars too

Are there characters on those keyboards you are talking about that I don't have?

From my (UK) point of view, you have a bagload available there Are most of those single keypresses, or are you using Ctrl+Alt combos to produce them? English uses no accenting at all - so in terms of 'standard keypresses', we have no real special characters. We can get things like éóíúá - those are all by pressing Ctrl+Alt then the key for the roman character being accented. None of them are visible on key faces though - we have alphanumerics, standard roman punctuation, and standard numeric/unit of measure symbols including the Euro € on Ctrl+Alt+4.

I don't think I can type the accent on ï on it's own with my keyboard I believe it's an umlaut in germanic languages However, I've never seen it used with i before, and I don't think it's commonly used in non-germanic languages - could be wrong though
