If all you are after is getting harvesting skill to a higher level then sitting after 1 mat makes sense. In this situation you don't really even care what kind of mat it is as long as the max quality is high enough for you. Grade does not even matter. This is not harvesting. This is leveling the harvesting skill.

If, on the other hand, you care about the output and will use it either for your own crafting or to supply someone else, it is then more efficient to produce 2 or more mats from a single extraction session. Even at a lowly 57 in harvest skill I can usually safely get 3 mats without destroying the node.

I don't care if I occasionally get an explosion which dishes damage. I have made sure that I have the hits to absorb one explosion easily and usually 2. If you are that frail that an explosion kills you, how are you going to harvest in dangerous areas? You will have to be escorted at all times. That is not the sort of harvester I wish to be.
