Regarding the apparent telepathic ability of all Homins on Atys.
In my guild, the Order of the Dragonblades, we have recently endeavoured to raise our RP-level and turn the world of Atys into something that is actually more or less consistent as the storyguides don't seem to worry about in-game story consistency.
I posted the following on out guild forums, but I thought I should post it here. Feel free to comment and suggest improvements.
----
As our guild endeavours to become more and more RP-oriented, more and more things that are not explained by the creaters of the game need to be explained by us. A major question recently has been the ability of Homins to engage in long-distance communication.
Haldir made an attempt to integrate this into the story with the introduction of Brooches that allow our characters to communicate, and that could explain the guild chat. However, we regularly team up as well, both in-guild and out-of-guild. As such I would like to propose the following story:
All homins of Atys, be they Matis, Tryker, Zorai, Fyros or Ruchei are
[cut:born telepathics. Every one of them. This telepathy comes in 3 variants. ]
[added: linked to the planet of Atys from birth. THis bond is not just emotional and physical, but also mental. Homins can project their throughts and the planet will pick them up. Also, the planet itself can propagate these thoughts and others to Homins in turn. Just like learning how to walk and talk, the Homins of Atys learn how to use this link as yet another natural means of communication.]
1) The first, and simplest is the regular though-casting.
A) The first kind of this telepathy allows any Homin on Atys to send a thought to any other homin. It is the most primitive, but the only one that can be initicated without physical nearness.
B) This can also be used in a less direct way, in just projecting out thoughts to the general area so that all who are within the nearest kilometer or so can hear it.
2) The second is the mind-merge which in turn comes in two versions.
A) The simplest one is the one used to form guilds. When joining a guild, you don't just say "OK, I'm in". Instead, you actually mentally integrate yourself into the hive-like mind of the guild. This larger entity is fairly strong and each one has a unique character that other Homins can sense, allowing them to intuitively know the guild membership of Homins they meet.
B) A tighter version of the mind-merge is the one used to form teams. This is pretty much the same, but it allows the members to not only communicate freely across any distance, but also sense with great accuracy where they team-mates are. Precisely enough for them to even cast spells on them blind-folded.
All these forms of telepathic communication are thought-based which is very important. Now, most often, people project spoken thought, because it has an easy structure, but projecting emotions is in no way an impossibility. The fact that it is based purely on thought also allows the communication to work without interruption even if the homin has been beaten so bad that they cannot act in any physical sense. In these cases, the mind protects itself by retracting deep down, maintaining only its telepathic links to the rest of the world.
Now, convenient as the forms of telepathy are, Homins still know how to speak. Some very seldom do, but for formal occasions, it is generally considdered proper conduct to speak out loud.
Now, one unanswered question is of course where this fairly advanced telepathic ability came from. Was it natural? Or did the Kami/Karavan genetically implant this form of communication much like they build the teleporter network? And if so, can they listen in to all thoughts projected? That is a question still open to debate.

Wow, nice little inside (or outside) box thinking. Its quite insightful, and would go along with answering the questions you sought out with. Nice job, but now let's see if the idea is adopted, shall we?
Nice. Kudos!

Re: Regarding the apparent telepathic ability of all Homins on Atys.
I would think more in the line of affliction linking. The hint is there anyway (Mind Lord anyone? ).
Rather then being telepathic, I like to think that a homins is connected to Atys, and Atys to the homins. Each homins forms (uncounciously, like breathing) a constant link with a region they enter.
Guild 'channels' and 'tells' would be a minor trained/focussed version of this ability to make links. Depicting you have to consiously decide to send a tell or to join a guild. Just like you can decide to hold your breath, or deliberatly hyperventilate.
I like the thoughts, very creative

Brilliant idea. I am going to use that chain of thought.

Go for it! Oh and share the musing and random thoughts, they might bring up more good ideas from other people.

Damn you for getting to that first! . That's exactly what I was thinking, and makes total sense to me. This seed appears to be what links us to Atys as well, so it being a common bond to Atys may mean that that's how we're able to communicate across Atys, as if it were in fact the medium.kibsword wrote:Maybe its something to do with this nano seed thing?

Thanks for the encouraging response.
Now, this nano-seed thing. I am not quite sure I connect to that one. Could someone please explain what it is?

Are you prepared for.. the truth?alurach wrote: Now, this nano-seed thing. I am not quite sure I connect to that one. Could someone please explain what it is?
Do you think you can handle it?
Is your mind ready to face it?
Will you believe it?
......
Here it is then.

We're all a bunch of plants!
......
Yes, you heard me right.
Homins are closer related to Stinga then to anything else on Atys.

May the Sap flow strong within you.
