Couple questions I have though:

1) After you pick your starter packages you can save up points and buy into another skill set right? Is it possible to be 250 in all 4 (5?) branches? Like be a fighter / mage / gatherer / crafter 250 in all 4?

2) Once you train up in something is it possible to untrain it? Just wondering if I'm going to end up having to make another character later on because I trained up underwater basket weaving on my first character instead of that instakill skill I should have gotten. ;)

Thanks,

Yes, you can level as many skill branches to 250 as you want. Only thing you need to remember/realize is that there are more then 4 branches! Each skill splits into 2 or more at one point or another... And sometimes more then once. The people at Ballistic got a nice skill tree here.

As to use skill point from one skill branch to "feed" the other, yes. It is posible but with some limitations. Few examples:- You can use fighting points to buy the "magic starter pack", but only if you did NOT pick magic when the character was created. You can't use fighting skill points to say get cold damage.- There are some things that can be obtain by using any of the skills. Like HP upgrades or magic auras.- You can use defensive magic points (say healing points) to upgrade ofensive magic skills (like elemental), but you can't buy a skill higher then your current level. That is no matter if you are 250 healing, you can only buy "Cold Damage 8" if your elemental is lvl 85+.As to "can you untrain skills"... The answer is no, and that is ok! After all you can get any skill you want, so there is no "wrong choice" per se.

Don't worry much about Skill Points. At 1st it may seem like you're never going to be able to "catch up", or get all the skills you want! But that's only temporary. As soon as you reach 100 with a couple of trees, you should have more then enough SP to get anything you want.

Only one thing, be careful with crafting SPs. Those are very expensive skills right there (at least 25 SP each)... But don't worry much either, once you got 4-5 branches to level 70 or 3 of them to 100 you should be ok, too.

It sounds you're having a hard time leveling elemental magic, that is ok. Elemental is kind of hard to level at 1st. What I recomend is leveling your melee 1st, get as much HP as posible, join a guild and get some nice HP Light Armor and HP Jewels... Then go and level your magic fighting yubos and meks. Then get Rot and continue with plants (Plants do magic damage, so all you need against them is good jewels)

As to the problems with the game, it would help if you post what system configuration. One thing you need to remember is that Ryzom requires a good equipment to run fine. A basic, good system goes like this:At least 1 Ghz CPU (AMD or Pentium 4, avoid Celeron)
At least 1 Gb of Ram
At least 64 Mb Video Card (NVidia MX are just fine)
At least 6 GB free disk space
Any audio card is ok.
Windows XP SP2
If you got yourself something like that and still having problems with, it could mean a problem with windows or hardware problems. Having a healty broadband line helps a lot, too.

A few more things: Come to the main lands as soon as you are able to move around and can kill yubos with no difficulty!

If you are going to start a new character, pick magic/craft/harvesting as your starter packs. It's pretty much the more bang for the buck (Well, actually the best way to go SP wise is Magic/Craft/Craft, but then it "hurts" having to use other skill's points to get harvesting)... Magic/Craft/Harvesting is the way to go.

That's interesting.. One of the things I enjoy about most about a skill based game is I'm able to switch classes without remaking a character. lol ... I can be pretty indecisive about what I want my character to be, so it's nice to know I can be everything at once. lol ;)

bstriege wrote:Guh ... Well, let's just say day 1 wasn't all that fantastic.

Once I finally got the game installed it took soooo long to patch because the game kept crashing. Never could figure out why. Even after I disabled my firewall and rebooted the game I guess kept loosing connection to the patch server and crashing.

After finally getting everything patched, I finally started up to create my character. Unfortuanly the character creation screen wouldn't stop running in Windowed mode and was extremely laggy. I checked the forums and that apparently happens to a lot of people. Only response I say from the mods was to change your resolution to 1024x768x32+ on your desktop. My desktop resolution is 1280x1024x32 and still ran like that. Again, never could figure out what it ran in windowed mode like that. Was extremely annoying though. Is it supposed to be like that? I can't stand doing things in Windowed mode.. heh

Finally created a character that I was happy with and tried to play. Now it started locking up at the loading screen ... ugh, back to the forums and after doing a lot of searching and trouble shooting I finally found some older NVIDIA drivers that let me login.

So, after 3-4 hours of problems I finally got in the game. (Still getting Windowed mode on character creation/select even with older drivers) I fumble around in newbie town for awhile adjusting my HUD and checking out settings and stuff. I finally find the welcomer that I had a task to see and wonder would doing the various tasks. Until I came to battling a grino (sp?). That thing took me to school in like 2 hits. lol

So after getting laided out by the gringo thing I decided to try some gathering and combat. I was able to kill the first noob monster with no problem, but after that it just went down hill. I started getting destroyed by any of the lowbie monsters that I tried to fight and started lossing my patience. :(

I was pulling with the acid spell and could get 2 or 3 casts in before they got to melee range. I'd then try to finish them off with my starter dagger. Unfortunatly the little rat things were ripping me appart before I could finish them off. After getting torn down a couple times I finally just logged out and called it a day.

I plan on looking over the manual I downloaded tonight and reading up on things before I try again. Ryzom is just way different than any game I've played and I just wasn't grasping it all that well. Maybe after I read through the manual I'll understand things better. There wasn't really a tutorial or anything, so I was pretty much flying blind. I'll probably just delete that character and start over from scratch after I read through the manual. Maybe starting with a clean slate and a little more knowledge will make for a better experience. hehe ;)

Anyways, is anyone has any advice for a beginner I'd welcome it. I wasn't really sure what packages to start with so I just did the default fighter / mage / gatherer thing.

I run the game in 1280 and no probs.

I use a NVIDIA 6600 GTOC with the latest drivers, no prob.

It's practically impossible to switch combat modes at your level, if you start a magic attack, keep at that.

Starter pack advice...
DO NOT select Melee, go for maybe Mage/Crafter, then make yourself some armour and a dagger, the use melee attacks with the dagger, you will generate melee skill points with the dagger and not waste creation points on a skill you will then, essentially be getting for free.

Use your melee then to build up your Constitution stats, then you can mage with high HP, so Yubos wont kill you as easily

You can buy into any other skill set for 50 points in a proffession, so dont sweat it.

You cannot untrain skills, but you will have more than enough points to change proffessions.

I am usually on from about 8 pm GMT, if you send me a /telll, and I'm not doing anything, I'll heal you for a few levels until you find your feet and answer any questions you may have :)

One piece of advice regrding your PC, d/l Adaware and run it, you might have some crap running in the background that you are not aware of.

lol, yesterday I was just having a hard time leveling anything. :) I was really fumbling around trying to figure out what was going on. I was hitting the mobs with magic to pull them, but even once I went to melee with my dagger I was getting taken down. Not sure what was going on .. By the time I finally got in game I was pretty frustrated with all the problem I had getting it going, so that maybe why I was having such a hard time.

When I get home I'm going to try it out again. From seeing people talk about it hear it sounds like it makes for a very cool game once you get a better feel for it. I've been playing WoW and ROSE, so I'm not really used to a game that requires some thinking to learn it. hehe

It's good to hear about the skill systems though.. As I said before, I have a bad habbit of playing a character for awhile then thinking, "Man a mage/crafter/warrior/ninja/underwater basket weaver would be awesome! I think I'll restart and play one of those!" Repeat that every week or 2 and it makes u a rather long character list. lol This is one of the main reasons I like the original SWG so much. If I wanted to be something else I changed cloths and just did it. I hope that Ryzom can be that way for me too, and it sounds like it will. :)

My system specs are:

AMD XP 2500
1 GIG of DDR RAM
GeForce FX 5200 128
Windows XP
40 Gig HD
SoundBlaster Live 5.1
512kbs Broad Band

I had just upgraded all my drivers a few days before, and my lock up problems went away after I downgraded them back to an older version. It just took me awhile to finally find some that work. I was just so dang eager to get ingame and check it out I was overlooking some things on the forums that could have helped.

However, I still haven't found a way to make the game go fullscreen when I start it instead of windowed. It goes fullscreen after I select and / or create a character though. Not a show stopper, but it sure makes it difficult to create a character though ... :(

Thanks for the responses. So far the community here has been my favorite part. :)

Didnt see anybody yet point to Klients, the out of game support tool.
There is a link to it on this page: http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2920

It might be usefull if you keep on crashing at certain points.

Also, the ratthings (yuboos) come in different difficulties. The number of stars shown in the target window shows how difficult the creature is. (The more stars, the harder it is)

Once I get ingame I don't have any problems with hardware or software, it's just from the point I start the game to the loading screen when my characte appears in the world. That's where Windowed mode won't go away and I crash or lockup. I posted my specs above, and I can run the game with mostly full settings with no problems once I'm in. ;) I don't have adaware, I didn't care for it too much. I use FoxFire and Spybot to keep my system clean. :) housecall.antivirus.com (Internet Explorer only) works great for finding viruses and spyware also if anyone ever needs it.

Thanks for the advise on starter packages BTW guys ... I just read somewhere else that EVERYONE starts with the basic fighter package, so it's a waste to pick it at startup. I think I'm going to blast that character and start with a clean slate when I get home. I'll go with the Mage / Harvest / Craft, create a weapon, and see how that goes. Hopefully I'll have better luck! :)

Oh, something I was a little confused about. If it's in the manual I haven't gotten to it yet. To increase your hit points, regen, SAP, etc, do you have to use your skill points to raise them or are you able to do that after your "level" with a different pool of points? I'm not really clear on how that all works yet.

I understand when you "level" a skill you can then speak with a trainer to get something new or upgrade a skill within that tree. Or you can save 50 (?) skill points and buy one of the starter packages. But do you also use those same skill points to increase your hps or such also? If I'm not being clear enough let me know and I'll try to ask a different way ...

Oh, and you said at my level it's almost impossible to switch "modes"?

"It's practically impossible to switch combat modes at your level, if you start a magic attack, keep at that."

I'm not really sure what's going on here ... Maybe that's why I was dying so much ... What I would do is find a mob I wanted to kill, cast acid on it 1-3 times while it was running at me. Once it got to me I would start the default attack and try to finish it off with melee.

Is that not a good way to do it? I was gaining melee and mage experience when I was actually able to kill something. Should I just be using melee or magic, not both during a fight? Personally I've always preferred melee over magic in every game I've played, so I'd really rather have a melee character with magic as a secondary thought.

Hi, welcome to Atys! :)

I think the lag during character creation came with the new patch. At least I didn't have any lag before I patched. As you said, dev's should enable full-screen as that should fix it.

As others have said, get to the mainland and get some friends. It can get a little lonely on newbie island.

Yeah, I've heard the same. That blue color sticks like nothing else; no soap in the world would ever help if you should fall and get some of it on your clothes/skin.

I tend to keep my distance, but there are some extremly unlucky onces which seem to have been covered from top to toe. :/

It is to my understanding that they all have been isolated in an area called "Witherings".
