Bah, censors would suck .. be not so cool.. >.> .. err..
i used to play a mmorpg that a bunch of little kids played - the game had to be censord and every other word was cencored it was HORRIBLE - even words ppl did not WANT to have censored (should not have been)
- besides that, i think our community is still one where ppl dont really need to swear/call each other deragatory things - if it comes out, its just an expression and i see nothign wrong in expression - even tho i personally dont swear at all.
good point tho Tyll - i agree with your view completely

Re: Whats in a Word?
Most amusing self-censoring programs cause trouble in normal sentences.
"Shhh its coming!" has been censored in one amusing game I used to post in.
"BRB itchy mouse arm" is another.
Funny thing is, it's brought up by the program before most people noticed.
Still, swearing can be found offensive, this game is playable by minors. Keep swearing to restricted channels where you know the participants whereever possible
. Swearing isn't contrary to good RP, though I prefer IC "swearing" like "Oh bodocs!".
I know I swear from time to time (mostly "cr*p, my bad! Sorry guys!"), but it's not unreasonable to ask for a little restraint in language use. And I try to control myself
Rambling now, should sleep.

Re: Whats in a Word?
We all agree that the majority of us have at some point seen a curse word while being ingame.
Should games come with a warning like on music with "parental warning" - but those warnings ( AFAIK) means that a child can still purchase the music with the "abusive" content in, but the parent is then aware of it. - or am i wrong in that?
As its generally agreed that curse/vulgar words are used rarely and when used result in a few different reactions - like lath saying the way he would approach a discussion with a homin would be different. What are your reactions to curse words? If you were to see a vulgar word come from a homin (not directed at another homin) what would you most likely do? - As mentioned before young players DO play this game, should we report to CSR on all accounts? When does the use of such lang. become a real problem?

Re: Whats in a Word?
don't think so. everyone swears now and again. i was swearing like a trooper a few weeks ago, had got so mad about an ingame situation everything i typed was very offensive - i would have reported me if it was someone elseffxjosh wrote:As mentioned before young players DO play this game, should we report to CSR on all accounts? think its only a problem when ppl do it repeatedly, the old expection rather than the rule thing. mostly i ask ppl nicely to stop if using the 'f' word in region and they generally do.

Re: Whats in a Word?
What's funny is, with all the references to protecting minors from swearing, it's minors who swear the most.

Re: Whats in a Word?
I definitely regard grammar as a critical part of an argument, but I don't think I've ever used a curse word to emphasize a point at the expense of correct grammar, unless it was intentional, or was just thinking faster than I was talking. Not to say my grammar is perfect, as I know it is nowhere near that.lathan wrote:I didn't say that I would dismiss an argument if it contained swear words, I just said it tends to make me more dismissive. I haven't said cursing offends me anywhere in that post; as I said, I curse too. If you don't believe in the concept of vulgarity, at least pay some homage to the concept of correct grammar. Most often when someone swears to emphasise a point they make grammatical errors because they have to fit the word into a sentence, and so they do it in a way that just sounds right, as opposed to a way that is actually correct.
I agree wholeheartedly, and I'm glad you have chosen the word 'often', as I have heard well-spoken people make terrible arguments, and heard the f-bomb dropped several times throughout an argument that was so well articulated that the person arguing against it had absolutely nothing worth saying in response.lathan wrote:The other thing that makes me less receptive to such an argument is that the use of a curse word often takes the tone of a subjective, rather than factual argument. For example, just describing something with a curse word as opposed to saying that it is fundamentally flawed lends less credence to the argument imo.
I do use them to emphasize my speech, and if there were no such thing as vulgar words, I believe they would still be able to emphasize my words equally as well. For me, these words show strong emotion, and when I use them, I do not intend to offend the other person, but I intend to show how passionate I am for what I am talking about. Sometimes I'll reach far into my mind, and pull out the best word to describe what I'm feeling... and other times, I think these allegedly foul words describe exactly how I feel, not to mention anyone else around is pretty clear on how I feel too.lathan wrote:And finally, a curse word's vulgarity is the very thing that lends it its ability to emphasise a point. I don't see how you can say you don't believe in vulgarity of curse words but then state that you use them for emphasis in arguments. I also don't believe (and never stated) that someone who curses is a lesser person, or that the words themselves are lesser. But they are used incorrectly often, and, personally, I like to see someone go the extra mile and put something more thoughtfully then to just throw in a curse to make themselves understood.
Now tell me if I'm wrong, but I think that while we don't see eye to eye on how these words benefit/detract from speech, I think we're both on the same page as far as how a good majority of people just don't know how to speak properly.

Trust me, he's right. His grammar is terrible.Lukati wrote:Not to say my grammar is perfect, as I know it is nowhere near that.
He's talking about me. Why don't you just say it? Only stupid people curse...Lukati wrote: Now tell me if I'm wrong, but I think that while we don't see eye to eye on how these words benefit/detract from speech, I think we're both on the same page as far as how a good majority of people just don't know how to speak properly.

rushin wrote:because the game has a universal rating maybe, and not 17+ (or whatever it is these days) swearing is fine and dandy for adults, but not for children i think most would agree.
I don't think that you can really use that argument....
While adults amy wish that kids don't know this kind of language, and may not want them to use it, the reality is that the majority of them know it all by the age of 11, and can (and do) usually outswear most adults :/ go figure...
