What Turned You?

Post by soulsnatcher »

Something Rushin said in the "Being an American" thread got me thinking. He mentioned a time "back when he was a casual player". So... what was it that turned people here from casual players into the kind of players you are now - hardcore/addicts/serious - whichever term you choose to use. Or maybe nothing has turned you, or maybe you are more casual than ever. If so speak up - what has made you the Ryzom gamer you are today?

hmm interesting question souls :P

Lemme think, well I guess I got addicted back in open beta 1, and it was the community spirit, mixed with the fun and variety of the gameplay that fight caught me. Ryzom was supposed to be a short pitstop between MMORPGs, and I guess I just fell in love ;)

Same thing playing through focus, OB2 and release to now. The game world is so enjoyable mixed with the best community out there, a fab support team, wonderful graphics and gameplay.

Theres just too many things to list now.

But what first hooked me was community and gameplay for sure :)

i think it was setting up a guild that started me off ;)

first few weeks i played had a lot of fun teaming with other new players, exploring a bit. used to log on for an hour or two during the week, and maybe sunday afternoon.. after a while found myself fast becoming friends with a couple of ppl (hi Virt, meph and jaydee) and my 1 or 2 hours turned into 3 or 4.. Quite liked the idea of starting a guild from scratch, none of us knew anything about the game back then so rushin the noob guild leader was born. from that point until the present day i have been so very busy ingame; there are always a million things to do.

I blame the community for turning me into a hardcore player, although an addict is probably a better word. For me at least Ryzom is not a game anymore, its a place to hang out, meet people, chat with friends, help out and take part in whatever is going on at the the time. Traditional game concepts like levels or attaining some preset goal are irrelevant now, i log into visit another world - some of it is the open-ended non-directed game desgin but mostly its the friendly, diverse and interesting people :)

Yep, Rushin said it for me too. I'm a *very* new player, so that may have a lot to do with it too, though. I tend to throw myself full-force into a new game. lol

But to be brutally honest, it's not just "the game". The community is what kept me here despite the fact that my lame computer has had so many problems with running the game. Even as I type this, I've just put in a better video card and am patching the game now....hoping that I'll get to play later tonight. But what am I *doing* while patching....I'm on Ventrillo listening to the fantastic people that I've met over the few days I was able to play, lol!

I came to Ryzom from a game that had a ....not-so-happy....community, and Ryzom is like a breath of fresh Spring air! I actually thought the community in that other game was good....until I came here and realized just what I had been missing out on. The players here are (generally) happy, willing to help....no, beyond "willing"....they throw themselves at you to help you, lol. The support team (CSR's) are all fantastic and Klients is the best thing since peanut butter and jelly!

I just know that as soon as I get my computer playing nice-nice with Ryzom, you won't be able to drag me out. The only time I'll leave is when the toothpicks holding my eyes open break, or when the servers shut down for patches, lol. But you can assure that when either of those things happen, I'll be back in as soon as possible.

So, in short answer to your question:

1. It's an awesomely captivating game
2. You have the best community I've seen in *any* online game

....not necessarily in that order, but it's hard to pick one over the other.

I've played a few mmorpg's and after some time i get enough and move on. Some games keep me for years and some games (like wow, no bashing intended) keeps me for 5 hours.

If the game is interesting i suppose i move from casual player to an addict pretty fast. And like the people above me stated, the community plays a very important factor, a great game with a lousy community will probably ruin the whole experience for me.
