well, i've played Beta and i loved the game (the crafting/mining system in perticular) but i couldn't continue because i couldn't find any game cards in the stores for it and at that time i didn't have a credit card.
well now i am wondering, is it worth it to start up now that the game has already been out for a whole year? i mean, judging from other mmo experience there would be tons of lvl cap toons running around there, pimping their alts and i will be kind of left out of it all.
and two other questions:
i know there is pvp in SoR, but is it open pvp? as in, i can just go and kill anyone i want from any race including my own? or is it just other races? i remember in beta you could duel your own race, but i don't remember if you could simply attack them.
i chose the international community to play on, but in my profile under community it says UK. does that mean i'll be playing on a UK server? are there no US servers? if so, how will my "lag" be if i am playing from Canada?
is it worth starting after 1 year?
Re: is it worth starting after 1 year?
There's plenty of other new/low level players around, and most high level people are more than happy to help outguitarex wrote:well now i am wondering, is it worth it to start up now that the game has already been out for a whole year?

Nope, no open-PvP yet. They are planning to bring out open faction vs faction combat at some point, and say they're implementing a "PvP flag" that means you can sit out of it, but we'll have to see how that pans out I guessguitarex wrote:i know there is pvp in SoR, but is it open pvp?

Yes you'll be on the UK server, and no there's not an NA one - the EE and NA servers were merged a while back, and now have people from all over the world (Russia, UK, US, Canada, Sweden, Denmark, Australia, Poland... you name it, I think we've got itguitarex wrote:i chose the international community to play on, but in my profile under community it says UK. does that mean i'll be playing on a UK server? are there no US servers? if so, how will my "lag" be if i am playing from Canada?

So I guess welcome (back) to SoR; I hope you stick around and have fun

Re: is it worth starting after 1 year?
Looks like Spriteh answered everything else, but I can respond regarding my particular experience in regard to lag. I'm from the USA and I have a fair bit of lag in-game. It is considerably worse whenever an event is taking place like the current one. I'm not certain if it's any different for Canadians, but do know a couple so I'll point them towards your post.

Re: is it worth starting after 1 year?
I know several people in the US and Canada who play without any lag problems. Lag can be caused by a couple things though. First obviously is your net connection. Second is your computer. If its not up to the task of handling the vid settings you've told it to use it can seem laggy cause its having a hard time with the graphics load. Usually turning down graphics settings can help this though.

As you probly already know all skilltrees are split up (and keep splitting if you gain more levels). This makes it possible for a player to be for example a high level mage but a low level fighter, and so on. Because of this you won't have much trouble finding your way around.
There are lots of new players around, they will need gear to, they also are looking for people to play with ect, ..

There is no open pvp, and I don't think there really will be. You will not be able to kill any player around you like to and its the same the other way around. Don't be afraid that the minute you step out one of the city gates you'll be killed by a high level player, I don't think Nevrax will ever allow this to happen.
This game is actually one big safe zone with a few pvp zones. The zones where pvp is allowed tend to be pretty high level area's with lots of agressive mobs. Even when entering a pvp zone the chance you get killed by another player is pretty slim, the community doesn't seem to like random killing.

Hmm, lag? Whats that?
With a decent broadband connection you won't have any noticable lag. Looking at the statistics while the game runs the download stream seems to be below 1kb/s most of the time, so you don't have to worry about that.

Well, I'm about as far from the servers as you can get and still be in Canada. (Vancouver, to be precise.)
Generally speaking, I don't have problems with lag, although I do get occasional "spikes" for no apparent reason. Fortunately, this isn't one of those games where you need a sub-100 ms ping to play. There's also a friend of mine in Victoria playing, and he's generally pretty lag-free as well.
And as for finding a lowbie party to play in: I'm not far shy of being one of those "level-cap toons". However, just last night I spent, oh, 6-7 hours working one of my lower skills in a party where 3 of the 6 players was under 60. And if you push for it, you can get 60 in a skill in, oh, 2 days. 3-4 if you're casual like me.

It's pretty fast to level up with teamwork and in the next chapter there will levelling-up potions IIRC. These are going to be crafted and it will take a while for the crafters to get good enough to make the high level ones, so for a start lower levels will have an additional advantage. This is the most supportive community out there so come on in and don't worry about levels

Re: is it worth starting after 1 year?
Well, Navra is from Toronto and I'm from Belleville, Ontario and neither of us experience major lag, and the occasional times when we do lag certainly add to the excitement.
I'm not as convinced as some of the others that you won't find the game heavy with level-capped toons. For the most part though, they'll be off doing their own thing most of the time. And, as you may already know, the game is divided into leveled regions, so if you stay in a region of your level, you should find similar leveled players to team with. Joining a guild can also be a good way to find people of your level to team with.
Sometimes the events can be a bit geared to the higher level players.
Also, the thrill of inter-continental travel is not what it used to be when the game first came out. Still, in answer to your original question, I think there is certainly a lot in Ryzom for you to enjoy, and I believe there are unique aspects to the game that make it worth starting even now.

Re: is it worth starting after 1 year?
A RL friend of mine jsut started the game last week and he seems quite enamored with it.
So yes I think there is something for someone starting even now a year after release. Not everyone is maxed out. I know I certainly am not and will be more than happy to team with lower lvl players. There's always a skill to use to help others with

You will also find people (like myself) who are willing to heal you whilst not in your team, thus not affecting the experience points you get from combat. I would say this technique has helped me level more than any other in combat. It's a guaranteed way to be helped by higher level players without affecting your progress.
