I don't like it, nor is it fair to say about most anybody who plays Ryzom. Anybody who played UO or EQ prior to non-pvp maps knows what a real ganker is like.
I especially believe that the term has no place in regards to Episode 2. It's not like it was previously where killing was only for fun. Those of us who enjoy fighting have a designated purpose, like it or not.
A "Ganker" is commonly somebody who takes something from you, be it money, your wallet, your car, etc. Nothing is taken from you when you die in Ryzom, except for a bit of pride and some time. You sign on the line the minute you cross over into a PVP zone.
Another common definition according to the Urban Dictionary (http://www.urbandictionary.com) is as follows:
One who exploits and underhanded tactics to win a battle to make up for their lack of school. "I would have won if that filthy ganker hadn't backstabbed me while I was AFK."
There have been, in my experience, a small few who might fit this description, but I really don't believe it describes anybody in Ryzom. I may be the only one who feels this way, but I actually find it a little offensive to be lumped into a category where I certainly do not belong.
Please, I implore you (all of Atys), to refrain from using such a disgusting term lightly.

Re: "Ganker"
Going into the PvP zones != consent as long as there are no other means of getting to the content found there.
Ambushing a digger or low level player is still ganking, despite your philisophical aims for doing so.
Gankers do indeed take away the time it takes for a person to get to that point in the game. Even if it is just a matter of running back to the field, it is time that could have been spent in pursuit of the player's goals.
If you don't want to be labeled as a ganker, then behave honorably.
If you kill the defensless, then don't complain about your reputation.

Re: "Ganker"
Yes Ganking is using underhanded tactics to win a battle. Ganking is also:
where you attack and kill somebody who is unprepared for combat
where you attack someone when you have an overwhelming advantage
I'll agree with you Spiff cant really blame the players for being "gankers" in episode 2. The very fact that fighters can get maximum honor points for taking out a digger while digging if they are 250 dig and very low level in any fighting or magic skill on rewards ganking (you killing someone unprepared, your attacking with an overwhelming advantage a "double ganker" ). By the very nature of the game mechanics a high lvl harvester who is still a high lvl mele and/or mage in all focus gear is absoltely no challange to the high lvl in PvP gear.
Also the whole kincher mess. Its completely unfair that all kinchers went east where the games design force one of the sides to be on the east . Nevrax doesnt fix the issue with the fear they dont even bother to make any statements on mob dragging. In the past mob dragging was no acceptable all of a sudden it was considered acceptable and they even removed the death penalty to show all players they were not going to stop this behaviour. Its by definition ganking when you kill the other side using mobs to engage your opponent or attacking your opponent when they are already busy with a mob.
Like I've said before its a "gankster's paradise"

Hmmm, shad?mrshad wrote:Going into the PvP zones != consent as long as there are no other means of getting to the content found there.
Content found in the Pvp areas right now is this - very simple maps where people fight over mission mats and dodge or kill weak minded, short sighted kitin. In the current map, there isn't even any ambient sound and the terrain is totally flat with no obstacles to get around or... well anything of interest.
The whole point of this event is to fight for your faction, so that your side will build temples faster than the other side. There *is* no other content provided there, so if you're not into fighting, there's no real point to being there.
You're not missing much if you never go near it, unless you really like fighting or dodging other people while also trying to dig mats.
Now, if they ever put something really cool, well planned, intricate, tied to the storyline, and 'world shaking' in an open pvp or forced fvf ruleset area, well, let's just say I'll be more inclined to agree with your argument here
Re: "Ganker"
I am not saying it is great content, or a riviting implementaiton of the storyline, or that it is anything more than the same old game, but now with special GANK!varelse wrote:Hmmm, shad?

However, it is the only place we can get honor points.
And we know that those points will be used for *something* (please make the something not suck; please make the something not suck).
If we want the honor points, we *have* to go there, there is no choice in the matter. If we don't care about the honor points, or don't want them badly enough to gank or be ganked over them, then we are paying for a game that we do not want to play in it's entirety...and where is the sense in that?
Re: "Ganker"
There is a huge difference in killing because you are directed to defend a cause and killing just because you can. In other games, where PVP is much more commonplace, the term "Ganker" might accurately describe many of the players, but honestly I don't believe it applies here. Prior to this event, I rarely involved myself in Prime Roots PVP and mostly just battled during events. Now that I am asked to fight for a just cause and keep the Kami from completing their temple, I am being labeled as the worst sort of player and to be quite honest I'm sick of it.
Nobody who enters a faction versus faction zone is unaware of the risks involved. Just because they take off their fight gear and strap on some focus armor does not mean that they are any less accountable and should not be thought of as some sort of magical anti-death spray. In fact, I believe that is all the more reason for me to target these people as they are the ones helping to improve the Kami structure. As I have stated before, while in such a zone, I will continue to fight any and all declared enemies to the best of my abilities. I am a soldier, fighting for a riteous cause. Call me what you will, but I do ask that you honestly think about what you say before you do so.

The problem is Nevrax has created a situation where both are the same.

It defintily applies here. The difference is that the game condones and rewards it like no other game has.
mtsmith wrote: I am being labeled as the worst sort of player and to be quite honest I'm sick of it.
I'll admit your doing what Nevrax wants; the problem is the way Nevrax has implemented EP2. I've been ganked and I'll call the people who catch me off guard gankers but I dont go beyond that. The issue I have with this is that nevrax is forcing/rewarding people/behaviour that is not tollerated by other gaming communities.

Thought about it.... I blame Nevrax... I so blame Nevrax .

This was a conversation in REGION; I have the screenie. I think this neatly illustrates that in the 'old lands' it is easy to attack people unprepared for combat and with overwhelming advantage.roninpvp wrote:Yes Ganking is using underhanded tactics to win a battle. Ganking is also:

The problem with the current FvF is that the diggers are unprepared for combat and that the attackers have an overwhelming advantage.
Maybe its bad tactics to leave the diggers exposed; maybe they should be surrounded by a cordon of fighters to protect them. My previous posts have been that the current landscape with the materials in the middle of a large open area and the current game mechanics do not encourage protection and leaves it open for a few people to "attack unprepared diggers with an overwhelming advantage".
I expect that the 'old lands' have been programed for some time and that Nevrax can only continue in this direction until this section is completed. From previous threads I am hopeful that they have learnt from this and that in the future we can expect a lot of fun.

Like killing someone from a distance when they're jogging along, minding their own business and carrying a pick you mean? Blasting someone when they can't fight back?mtsmith wrote: One who exploits and underhanded tactics to win a battle to make up for their lack of school. Not at all the same as camping a low level hunting area and killing every noob who walks out, ressing them, killing them, ressing them, killing them, looting them, laughing at them, then hacking up their body and spreading the body parts all over. THAT is ganking. Get a clue.philu wrote:Like killing someone from a distance when they're jogging along, minding their own business and carrying a pick you mean?
