Radeon 9200 Pro 128MB (game freeze once in game)

Post by oddie »

I am hoping someone can give me a fix for this problem. I have a Radeon 9200 Pro 128MB on one of my computers. (has a P4 2.8 w/HT and 1GIG of DDR RAM)

Initially I tried playing this game on auto and it kept choosing the D3D mode and as soon as I would get into the game it would freeze and crash the game sometimes even making my computer reboot. (when it would crash in D3D it would give me some message saying my windows graphics driver stopped working and I also made sure I had the most recent drivers and even tried rolling back drivers to no avail) So then I started reading the forums and also spoke to someone on the chat support and was told to change the graphics to openGL which I did successfully. I can now get into the game and even fight a little but my ping goes off the wall and then I freeze soon after. I know none of this is related to bad hardware or anything like that. I play EQ and COH and Lineage2 on it. Considering those factors, there has got to be some setting that I am missing. Can someone help me please? Or are we stuck until Ryzom comes up with a fix for ATI users since this game is so G-Force friendly?

seems like it. ultimately, the only workaround that worked for me was the OpenGL method, but even that only just keeps it from crashing as frequently.

There's a problem with Matis and Tryker (I think Tyker too anyway) graphics that cause PCs using ATI cards to freeze, I believe it's directly linked to Karavan units/ships.

If you want to just play and not worry about freezing, play a Fyros or Zorai.

D3D is what ATI cards should be using.

I had the freezing problem on my Matis all the time, got so bad I almost quit, but then I tried Fyros and never had a single freeze, same with Zorai.

I have read it's the newer Radeon cards as I understand it that are to use the D3D and the older ones such as mine that are to use the OpenGL. Not exactly sure why except that I have read it's something to do with the way they are set up. I did try the D3D and it was even worse. I couldn't even move before I froze up, in OpenGL I can at least play for a couple of minutes before I crash.

I will try playing the Zorai and see what happens. Hopefully that will be successful.

That is such a shame. I know there are alot of ATI users out there that would love this game (quite a few people I know personally). Using G-Force as a sponsoring plug might help them financially support the game now if indeed that's what it is, but in the long run I think this will hurt them.

It is correct that the older Radeon cards were first made to take advantage of OpenGL, but all the recent drivers have shifted them to D3D. I use a Radeon 9000 and I always use D3D as I get much better performance with it, infact auto detect configs with other games (including Ryzom) even select D3D for me rather then OGL.

This problem however is not linked to either D3D or OGL, it is a problem with ATI cards in general and you will experience it with either setting, as you noted yourself. I don't know why exactly it takes longer for the freeze to happen with OGL then with D3D, possibly it's because the problematic "thing" (model, texture, effect or whatever) is loading differently.

My best advice, play Fyros or Zorai for now and steer clear of any Karavan, Matis or Tryker objects. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Well I am not exactly sure why what I did worked or how but I fixed my problem. I did end up making a Fyros and played fine with no problems. But then I got to talking to some of the other players in the newbie land before I got too far along and they all suggested I try drivers from Omega rather than directly from ATI'S regular website. So, I did this. However when I tried to play after this it told me I was missing some GL file. I tried rolling back my drivers and even uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail, still kept getting the message. At some point I even went into the configuration and clicked off all 4 of those boxes for shading, ect. (my thinking was maybe turn some stuff off so it's not processing so much) Still no luck. Finally I decided to do a system restore and was right back where I started. But thinking to try again since I had checked those boxes off, I tried. Lo' and behold it worked. No lag, no freezing. Till I went LD. I thought it was my computer and realized when I clicked all the boxes I had also clicked to turn texture compression off (I think in doing this it actually makes it work more) so I went to turn it back on and leave the other stuff off and come to find that when I had done the system restore it must of reset those boxes because none of them were checked. So I went back into the game and found my LD was not due to my computer, everyone else had gone LD, too. I played for another hour and a half with no problems. I even went near the Karvan. Wish I knew what solved the problem so others could fix theirs as well. I do wonder though if being in newbie land or the mainland has anything to do with it. (This all done in OpenGL btw.)

There wasn't much of a problem on the Matis starter island for me, only one freeze in like 10 hours of play. Wasn't until I got to ther mainland that I started freezing constantly.

Guess I forgot to mention what my main is. She is a Tryker. I had problems on the newbie land. I wasn't on the mainland long enough or enough times before I went through all my "fixes" to know if I actually did something to fix it or if it was just being on the newbie land. Only once and briefly. I froze that time as well so I assume whatever I did fixed it somehow.
