Looking at other threads it appears that some bank/credit card companies do not accept the low amount of £1. Many people have solved this by simply phoning the card provider and asking them to authorise the £1 test charge.

Yup, many cards, if not all do refuse the $1 sneak fee, which is returned.. This is most likely what the problem was.

however... if it said is in progress i wonder how much time was given before you tried to cancel it. If you had problems with a slow download of the patch is naturally follows that the transaction servers were slow as well. Thus there might not be a problem at all, and all you did was cancel the card to soon. Its a possibility..
